Job Summary

CU Science Discovery encourages applications for a STEM Education Specialist! This role supports Science Discovery's K-12 STEM education outreach programs including school and teacher programs, summer camps and other out-of-school-time classes and community outreach events. The primary focus of the position is instruction and facilitation in school programs (delivered at schools and community sites throughout the Denver metro area), traveling STEM workshop programs throughout the state, and summer camps (on the CU Boulder campus). Secondary responsibilities include curriculum development and materials support, including the procurement and preparation of materials used in Science Discovery programs.

Who We Are

CU Science Discovery is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education outreach organization in the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Science Discovery collaborates with CU faculty, research groups, institutes, and graduate and undergraduate students to develop and deliver hands-on, inquiry-based programs for K-12 students and teachers that feature CU STEM research and model best practices in teaching and learning.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Teach in CU Science Discovery's school programs, summer camps and other out-of-school-time community programs:
  • Facilitate hands-on STEM education classes and workshops for K-8 students during the school year. This may include workshops delivered at school or community sites throughout the state as well as out-of-school-time classes on the CU Boulder campus and at sites throughout the local community.
  • Serve as a lead instructor in Science Discovery’s summer camp program, facilitating hands-on STEM programs for K-12 youth.
  • Facilitate hands-on STEM activities and programs for youth and families at outreach events and programs, both on campus and throughout the community.
  • Provide instructional support in teacher professional development workshops and programs.
Support curriculum design for STEM education programs:
  • Support School & Teacher Programs Manager and STEM Curriculum Designer in updating curricula as needed for School Programs and STEM Workshops.
  • Support Informal STEM Programs Manager in designing hands-on STEM education curricula for summer camps and other out-of-school-time programs and training part-time instructors to effectively lead camps and classes.
  • Identify, pilot and evaluate STEM education resources, materials and activities in order to update and refine school programs, summer camps and other out-of-school-time classes.
Support materials procurement and preparation for summer camps and school programs:
  • Support Science Discovery’s informal STEM programs by purchasing and preparing materials as needed for programs.
  • Make independent decisions regarding materials purchases and work within established programmatic budgets to ensure that purchasing is completed in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Identify creative uses for recycled and repurposed resources in Science Discovery's informal STEM education programs.
Support coordination of part-time staff, student staff, and volunteers:
  • Support School & Teacher Programs Manager and Informal STEM Programs Manager in recruiting and coordinating CU student staff and volunteers.
  • Support training of part-time staff, student staff, and volunteers in pedagogy and best-practices in inclusive informal STEM education.
What You Should Know
  • This is a full-time, year-round position. The ability to take extended vacation during the summer months (May – early August) will be limited.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support out-of-school-time programs.
  • Due to teaching responsibilities, this is primarily an in-person position. Some remote work during the school year is permitted, as allowed by program schedules.
  • Position involves travel to offsite locations and may include occasional overnights.
  • This role needs to have reliable transportation to use for off campus events and programs. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this position is $53,000 to $57,680 annually.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), social science, education or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching in a formal classroom setting or informal K-12 STEM education programs or summer camps.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle background check.
What You Will Need
  • Knowledge of research-based standard methodologies in teaching and learning.
  • Ability to facilitate hands-on, interactive STEM education programs for a wide range of ages (4 years and up).
  • Awareness and understanding related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, specifically how to foster a welcoming learning environment for children and youth of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to think creatively and design effective ways to teach STEM topics to children and youth.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, patient and resilient in a sometimes-stressful environment.
  • Ability to lift and move things around (weight up to 25 lbs.+ on occasion).
  • Strong computer skills and willingness to learn and interact with new technology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively with a team.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • 2 or more years of formal or informal K-12 STEM education experience, including classroom teaching experience and/or work in a summer camp or afterschool setting.
  • Passionate about exciting youth about STEM fields and expanding access to.
  • STEM career pathways to children and youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous experience working with budgets and/or completing purchases and/or programming within a set budget.
  • Bilingual language proficiency (English / Spanish) is preferred, but not required. Bilingual/bicultural applicants are encouraged to apply!
