Dean of the School of Allied and Public Health

 

Purpose:

 

The Dean of Allied and Public Health will provide school-wide leadership for nursing, allied health, and public health. The Dean will be an experienced visionary and strategic leader who is passionate about the institution's academic mission and a champion for excellence of pedagogy. The role will include oversight of school operations, marketing, recruitment, and curriculum design. The Dean will work closely with the health industry partners to design innovative curricula that enhances students' skills and knowledge and comply with professional accreditation requirements, to recruit students and faculty, and to manage the operational logistics of major grants and contracts

 

The Dean is responsible for operating the school at the highest level of quality and efficiency while promoting a culture of assessment that yields positive student outcomes. The Dean will be results­ oriented to ensure long term success of the institution. The Dean must be capable of establishing ambitious targets for the school, maintaining visibility of outcomes while driving quality execution.

 

Responsibilities of the Dean include:

 

  • Support high-quality teaching, faculty research, and creative and professional activities.
  • Foster academic planning and innovative curricular and scholarly development.
  • Seek research grants, expand advancement efforts and public/private partnerships.
  • Ensure effective management of financial resources including budget planning and management.
  • Recruit and recommend the employment of both full-time and part-time faculty and ensure credentials comply with all applicable licensing and accreditation requirements
  • Conduct timely review, evaluation, and development of faculty and staff.
  • Support the School's efforts to educate the healthcare workforce to ensure state-of-the-art skills.
  • Enhance the School's profile.
  • Explore resource streams.
  • Engage with alumni and the community.
  • Oversee educational programs, including design and revision of courses; identification of resources; coordination of course offerings, registration, and evaluation.
  • Support the College's commitment to diversity and fostering, academic, and non-academic activities to increase the School's visibility within the community.
  • Enhance the College's efforts to prepare a culturally diverse cadre of health professionals in partnership with the local health care community.
  • Conduct health industry research and analysis including appropriate market research, data collection, and analysis, as well as educational research in nursing, allied, and public health field.
  • Coordinate the annual and long-range departmental planning and evaluation processes.
  • Maintain current policies and procedures of the School.
  • Orchestrate the School's engagement in and adherence to state, federal or accrediting regulations related to nursing, allied, and public health
  • Assist with the resolution of student concerns and complaints.
  • Develop effective partnerships with healthcare industries in the identification of training needs. Serve as the College's liaison with these industries.
  • Develop and coordinate the program advisory committees.
  • Attend regional, state-wide, and national meetings in order to maintain professional growth and represent the College.
  • Serve on institutional committees as directed by the President or VPAA
  • Perform other duties as assigned by President

 

Qualifications

 

The Dean of Allied arid Public health must possess a Master's degree in Nursing with a doctorate degree in a relevant field. The Dean must possess credentials and have experience in teaching in one of the disciplines in the school. Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in higher education administration.

 

Other Qualifications

 

A record of academic achievement in the discipline meriting appointment as a tenured full Professor in an academic School; University teaching experience complemented by a scholarly record; a record of proven leadership and administrative experience related to the work of the School or related multidisciplinary programs; understanding of the instructional, research, and creative needs of higher education; demonstrated success in obtaining grants; demonstrated effectiveness working in a multi-cultural environment; and evidence of strong commitment to the goals of urban public higher education serving diverse populations.

 

The Dean must have the ability to work independently; exercise discretion and sound judgment in decision making; respond to critical matters effectively, and represent the school in a professional manner. Must be committed to a collaborative work environment and high-quality service to constituents.
