Job Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for a Veterinary Assistant or Technician to perform a variety of tasks related to the medical care and husbandry of raptor patients at the Auburn University Raptor Center Bartlett Hospital.
Typical schedule is Sunday – Thursday from 7:45am – 4:45pm with some weekends and/or holidays. Flexibility will be required.

Essential Functions
- Schedules procedures and coordinates with clinicians for veterinary services of the rehabilitation and educational units. Including but not limited to working with raptor center clinicians and services within the CVM for surgeries, examinations, diagnostics, and patient consultations.
- Assists program veterinarians with development of diagnostics and medical care SOP’s.
- Assists with clinical veterinary student oversight while at the Raptor Center. Including, but not limited to, assisting with student instruction through preparation of materials, observing, monitoring, and/or grading tasks. Development, coordination, delivery of clinical rotation lectures and labs, and review of current offerings.
- Assists clinicians and veterinary students with daily rounds and associated treatments. Including, but not limited to, daily medical treatments, and new and current patient examinations.
- Assists with the recruitment, development, coordination, and delivery of lectures, labs, workshops, and hands-on opportunities for participating university clubs, Auburn University organizations, outside organizations and clubs, including non-clinical veterinary student Raptor Team. Establish new volunteer opportunities for pre-vet and technical students.
- Assists in the daily husbandry, feeding and cleaning, of patients within SRC . Including but not limited to patients needing medical care, intermediate care, aviary patients, and rehabilitation resident raptors.
- Assists with recruitment, training, and supervision of new and current volunteers of the raptor center.
- Operates, maintains, repairs, and cleans hospital equipment, laboratory/clinic area, and orders/maintains supplies.
- Cares for and monitors the condition of all raptors housed at the raptor center including before, during, and/or after surgery, while in the hospital under medical treatment, and during flight conditioning in outdoor aviaries.
- Provides excellent customer service to the public needing assistance with injured, ill, or orphaned raptors and other wildlife species.
- Performs laboratory sample collections, diagnostic imaging,
administer prescribed medications and treatments under the
direction of a veterinarian and in accordance with the Alabama
Practice Act.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for the Veterinary Assistant level, candidates must have a high school diploma plus 2 years of experience working with raptors, wild birds, or exotic birds in a clinical, rehabilitation, or zoological facility.
To qualify for the Veterinary Technician level, candidates must have an active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
