The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Graduate School has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Learning Officer (CLO) for the PA Leadership and Learning Academy (PALLA). The CLO will oversee a well-established faculty development fellowship and an emerging preceptor advancement academy. The CLO will serve as a faculty member, non-tenure track, in the Graduate School, responsible for teaching and advising, research, service and administrative duties related to the faculty role. The CLO will report to the Executive director of PALLA and will serve as a member of the executive team crafting and implementing the strategic goals of the Academy and assuring progress toward the established aims of; faculty development, clinical education optimization and providing expertise and establishing models for program evaluation and accreditation compliance. PALLA seeks an innovative, interprofessional educator, scholar, and thought leader who possesses exceptional educational and scholarly skills as well as a record of teaching excellence. The successful candidate will support PALLA to fulfill its mission of advancing PA education, research, leadership, and policy.

UMB Graduate School is also home to the PA leadership and learning academy and is launching the first DMSc in the state of Maryland and the second DMSc program in a research intensive institution within the U.S. PALLA is a statewide initiative to advance PA education excellence, leadership, research, and policy. PALLA’s faculty fellowship provides PA clinicians with transformational experience and preparation to become part of the PA faculty workforce. PALLA collaborates with all PA programs in Maryland and has recently launched a Preceptor Academy with a vision of advancing excellence in clinical education and precepting.

Chief Learning Officer Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Administrative Leadership (50% Effort)
  • Oversees recruitment, admissions, and matriculation of fellows in the PALLA’s teaching fellowship and preceptor academy.
  • Directs the process for PALLA fellows’ application, interview, and selection process.
  • Models and promotes best practice in the teaching and learning of health professions.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of the fellowship curriculum and platform to advance faculty skills.
  • Through the newly launched PALLA preceptor academy, equips preceptor fellows with skills for efficient and effective precepting and clinical education.
  • Spearheads development of programming designed to build an intellectual community and promote application of andragogic approach to health profession education and leadership.
  • Collaborates with strategic partners to devise cutting-edge curricula and models for the development of academic leadership across health profession education programs.
  • Leads oversight for establishing quality and effective program initiatives for the academic, social, emotional, and physical elements of fellows and faculty development, success, and retention.
  • Executes leadership in the development of internal and external partnerships to establish academic program initiatives for co-curricular and inter-professional academic programming.
  • Collaborates with PA programs across Maryland to esnsure continuous quality improvement in the training of PA students.
  • Integrates inclusive teaching best practices in all PALLA educational offerings
  • Generates sustainability plans for PALLA fellowships.
  • Ensures that PALLA stays in compliance while offering CME category one credits to fellows.
  • Plans and manages events associated with PALLA fellowships (e.g. welcome ceremony)
  • Leads the PALLA faculty development mission advancement team (Faculty MAT).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by PALLA Executive Director
Teaching and Academic Advising (20% Effort)
  • Develops and teaches courses for the PALLA fellowships. May also be involved in developing and teaching courses in other programs at UMB Graduate School.
  • Prepares online course materials following the standardized instructional design process established by the Graduate School
  • Mentors and advises PALLA learners on scholarly research projects that lead to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with other teaching units within the Graduate School (foster interprofessional education and practice)
Research and Scholarship (20% Effort)
  • Supports PALLA’s scholarly activities that include conceptualization of research studies, writing, editing, and disseminating manuscripts and research reports.
  • Participates in grant writing activities at PALLA and the graduate school
  • Collaborates with fellow PALLA scholars and external researchers in conducting qualitative and quantitative research studies on health professions education, practice, and workforce trends
  • Seeks external funding and publish in high impact journals related to medical education, health policy and health services research
Professional and Public Service (10% Effort)
  • Participates in professional, university, and departmental service activities.
  • Represents University of Maryland, Baltimore Graduate School and PALLA at national meetings and organizations and through the dissemination of high-quality scholarship
  • Serves on departmental, institutional and system committees.
  • Models and promotes the University of Maryland core values.
Qualifications :
  • Doctoral degree is required. PhD, EdD preferred
  • Eligibility for Maryland licensure as a health care provider (practitioner)
  • Experience in Medical Education, Health professions Education, PA education, Community Health, Education, Leadership or Assessment Research.
  • Record of excellence in teaching. Minimum of 3 years teaching experience.
  • Academic leadership experience preferred
  • Experience in health services research and faculty mentoring
  • Record of scholarly publications and presentation activities
  • Recognition as a leader in higher education and the field of PA education
  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, preceptors, clinical site staff, and organizational administrators is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs required.
