Position overview
Position title: Instruction and Exhibitions Librarian (Associate Librarian, Potential Career or Career)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $66,878 - $92,074.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: This position is a member of the Professional Librarians Unit (LX) and is represented by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The initial appointment will be a full-time appointment. Non-temporary appointments to the Librarian Series at UCSC are offered as potential career or career status as appropriate (see Article 4 D. Terms of Service of the UC-AFT labor contract. In accordance with policy, the selected candidate will undergo the Librarian Peer Review process where their performance will be reviewed and assessed. The Librarian Peer Review outcomes will determine the candidate’s suitability to receive career status and to move through the ranks.

Position Description
The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Instruction and Exhibitions Librarian, which reports directly to the Head of Special Collections and Archives. The University Library seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, and service-oriented professional to coordinate instruction and exhibitions for the Special Collections & Archives department. A growing number of faculty and students are using archives, manuscripts and rare books in new and increasingly complex ways. In support of research and teaching, the Instruction and Exhibitions Librarian is responsible for coordinating exhibitions, instruction, programming, and reference for Special Collections & Archives. The Instruction and Exhibitions Librarian also serves as registrar for loans.
The Special Collections & Archives department at the UC Santa Cruz University Library acquires and manages rare book and primary source collections to support and enrich research, teaching, and learning at UC Santa Cruz. Special Collections & Archives holdings include a significant book collection including an unusually large number of artists’ books, fine press, and early printing as well as over 600 archival collections, with particular strengths in 20th century photography, art, music, and astronomy.
The successful candidate will be assigned the following duties:
- Collaborate with staff in Special Collections and across the library to oversee an instructional outreach program that features the holdings of the department and supports the teaching mission of UC Santa Cruz.
- Oversee and manage the Special Collections exhibition program in conjunction with colleagues, graduate student fellows in the Center for Archival Research and Training (CART), and undergraduates through experiential learning programming.
- Serve as the collection development lead for artists books, fine press, and early printed books in Special Collections, in consultation with the Department Head.
- In collaboration with departmental colleagues, develop programs and services that publicize the collections through exhibitions and outreach activities including tours, presentations, public events, and outreach sessions with constituents on campus and in the greater Santa Cruz County community.
- Collaborate with Library Development to promote Special Collections to prospective donors through events and communications.
- Supervise and collaborate with the Public Services Coordinator to provide reference services and fulfill requests for reproductions and permissions related to the Collection.
- In consultation with the department head and in collaboration with the public services coordinator, implement policies and procedures for reference, duplication, access, and reading room services in accordance with identified standards and best practices.
- Serve four-six hours per week at the reference desk.
- Serve as exhibitions registrar for external loans.
- Coordinate the maintenance of the Special Collections website.
- Participate actively in the Special Collections & Archives profession.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined below in the Basic Qualifications section. In addition, applicants with any combination of the following areas of expertise or experience are encouraged to apply:
- Formal coursework, training, or experience in the development of print collections in a Special Collections environment.
- Experience developing and accessing services to support or enhance research, teaching, and/or scholarship.
- Experience creating inclusive and antiracist learning environments.
- Formal coursework, training, or experience in preservation management, rights management, and exhibition loan procedures.
- Experience working with development and donor relations programs.
- Familiarity with copyright, fair use, and other intellectual property issues related to libraries, archives and special collections.
- Knowledge and understanding of the standards, ethics, security guidelines, and best practices in use by special collections professionals and related professional groups including ACRL’s Rare books and Manuscripts Section, the Society of American Archivists, and the American Alliance of Museums.
- Evidence of successful teamwork in a highly collaborative environment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to successfully balance and complete multiple assignments and projects.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree or masters degree or higher in a relevant field such as public history, museum studies or archival management.
- Minimum of two years of recent experience in reference, undergraduate outreach, and exhibition creation in a special collections setting.
- Formal coursework or training in special collections librarianship, museum studies, and/or history of the book.
- Experience or training in primary source literacy, object-based pedagogical strategy, and/or active learning techniques using primary sources and/or special collections.
- Knowledge of the ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in higher education and strategies for creating inclusive and antiracist learning environments.
