Position Purpose

The Associate Director of Admissions manages all aspects of undergraduate recruitment and evaluation in a designated geographic area and acts as the Dartmouth liaison with high schools, parents, students, and alumni admission volunteers in this territory. The Associate Director also manages aspects of the department’s office-wide access recruitment portfolio and provides leadership and supervision to other members of the admissions staff as assigned.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Five years of administrative experience in selective college admissions in a fast-paced, multidimensional environment. Highly/most-selective admissions experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in a liberal arts discipline.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills as well as confidence and clarity in public speaking.
  • Facility with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and related database and word processing applications.
  • Exceptional planning, time management and organization skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Analytical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Strong sense of judgment and discretion at all times.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Dartmouth driver certification.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in significant out of town travel as well as evening and weekend commitments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education or a related field is preferred.
  • Highly/most-selective admissions experience strongly preferred.
  • Staff supervision experience or ability to supervise staff strongly preferred.
  • Facility with Technolutions’ Slate software.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Mandarin.
  • Evidence of a collaborative style in a project-based setting.
  • Optimism, high energy and a sense of humor are valuable assets.

Key Accountabilities

Description

Admissions Officer – Develops and implements the marketing strategy to promote Dartmouth and increase its visibility in the designated region; completes at least 6 weeks of recruitment travel each year. Independently interprets Dartmouth admission policies, as set by the vice provost/dean, in a most-selective holistic evaluation process. Assesses and documents academic and personal credentials of applicants in a detailed reading process. Acts as a territory manager to read and evaluate at least 1,200 applications for undergraduate admission per year; serves as a full-voting member of the selection committee. Acts as an optimistic and innovative colleague in a high-volume, high-stress environment; initiates new strategies for administrative success and efficiency; develops relationships on campus and in the community to accomplish these goals.

Interprets Dartmouth’s strategic communications and marketing plan to effectively differentiate Dartmouth from its competitors in all interactions with the public and with Dartmouth’s partners. Conducts group information sessions for applicants and parents on campus and off campus. Communicates regularly with administrators, coaches, students, parents, guidance counselors, faculty and alumni regarding policies and decisions. Develops informative, in-person and internet-based relationships with prospective students. Provides professional guidance to applicants, parents, and guidance counselors about preparing for the admissions process in general and the admissions requirements for Dartmouth in particular.

Description

Portfolio Area – In concert with the Senior Associate Director of Admissions, manages the office’s strategic and tactical planning within one or more of the following portfolios: access recruitment, communications, campus programming and visitor relations, recruitment/selection planning.
Specific duties are contingent upon the best skills/opportunity/temporal match. In all cases, the Associate Director manages an array of projects and collaborates with colleagues within the office, with partners in other offices at the College, and with partners at other organizations.
