Position Summary
Under general direction of Pipefitter Foreman (Refrigeration Mechanic) or designee, the Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) reports to the Pipefitter Foreman (Refrigeration Mechanic) or designee. This position also interacts with other Physical Plant staff, Heating Plant staff, Grounds staff, Building Services staff, Residential Facilities, Support staff, outside contractors and vendors. This position represents NIU and the Physical Plant and conducts themselves in a professional manner when working with members of the campus, vendors, and the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the installation, maintenance, service, troubleshooting, repair and properly charging refrigeration systems according to manufacturer specifications.
- Perform journeymen-level work in the diagnosis, repair and
overhaul of the following:
- all comfort cooling and dehumidification equipment regardless of type; (reciprocating, centrifugal, scroll, or rotary, (air or water-cooled);
- all comfort cooling sub-assemblies such as compressors;
- medium and low temperature dining and scientific refrigeration equipment regardless of type (water baths, cascade systems, flash freezers, icemakers and environmental chambers);
- sub-assemblies used on medium and low temperature dining and scientific refrigeration equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks assigned to the Refrigeration Shop through the TMA work order management system and assigned by the Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) Foreman or designee.
- Observes and follows Federal EPA guidelines for the safe handling of refrigerants.
- A. Certificate of completion of Pipetrade apprenticeship under
a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program.
OR
B. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Pipefitter or other Pipetrade classification with a minimum of five (5) years (60 months) of actual work in the trade, which may have included apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Pipefitters, Pipefitter Welders, Refrigeration Mechanics, Temperature Control Mechanics, Sprinkler Fitters, and/or Oil Burner Mechanics.
Condition of employment:
- Valid/current driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Knowledge and ability to perform manual labor or mechanical operations (construction, installation, repair, and maintenance) customarily performed in the pipefitter trade.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Design- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and model.
- Mathematics – Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.
- Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Complex Problem Solving – Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Operation and Control – Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
- Equipment Maintenance – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Troubleshooting – Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
- Installation – Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing so others will understand.
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

- Must be able to work underground, in ceilings and in confined spaces and be able to maneuver and carry equipment to those locations.
- Visual acuity to differentiate between color-coded piping and wiring.
- Ability to bend, crouch, kneel and reach overhead.
- Ability to get in and out of heated and protected areas; but, occasionally exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow, etc..
