Duties and Responsibilities

Loyola University Chicago’s Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health seeks an exceptional scholar and experienced administrator to serve as its inaugural Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship. As a champion and chief steward of the Parkinson School’s research enterprise, the Associate Dean will inspire, promote, and support excellence in research and scholarship and build a robust portfolio of funded scholarly activities, thereby enhancing the Parkinson School and Loyola University Chicago’s distinction and impact.

As the principal advocate for the needs of investigators across the school, the Associate Dean will be responsible for faculty and professional staff training and mentorship in research and scholarship development. The Associate Dean will strengthen and manage the school’s research infrastructure and work closely with the University’s Office of Research Services to employ best practices, enhance sponsored research administration, and ensure regulatory and institutional compliance.

Since its launch in 2019, the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health has distinguished itself as a boldly innovative and entrepreneurial school that emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, collaboration, and care for communities. With an ethos of design- and systems-thinking, the Parkinson School translates research, scholarship, and teaching to scalable, sustainable solutions. Faculty in Applied Health Sciences, Healthcare Administration, Health Informatics and Data Science, and Public Health Sciences prepare the next generation of scholars, educators, and health practitioners to expand knowledge and drive change in service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.

The Parkinson School is the home for Loyola’s participation in the Institute for Translational Medicine ( ITM ), a Chicago-area Clinical and Translational Science Award ( CTSA ) hub that also includes University of Chicago, Rush University, Advocate Health Care, Illinois Institute of Technology, and NorthShore University Health System. Fueled by nearly $35 million in NIH grants, ITM is part of a national network of more than 60 sites collaborating on translational research to expedite results from bench to bedside.

The successful Associate Dean candidate will have a record of distinction in research, extramural funding, and graduate education, ideally in areas aligned with the Parkinson School’s mission and strategic priorities. Prior experience in community-engaged research and scholarship and collaboration with CTSAs and analytical and bioinformatics teams are preferred.

Qualifications

The Parkinson School seeks an accomplished scholar and exceptional administrator to serve as its inaugural Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship. To be considered, candidates must meet the University’s criteria for a tenured or tenure-track faculty appointment at the Professor or Associate Professor level. An earned doctoral degree is required.

The successful candidate will have a record of distinction in research, extramural funding, and graduate education, ideally in areas aligned with the Parkinson School’s mission and strategic priorities. Prior experience in community-engaged research and scholarship and collaboration with CTSAs and analytical and bioinformatics teams are preferred.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Leadership and vision: Ability to conceive, implement, and foster a shared vision and to develop strategic directions for the future.
  • Commitment to research and scholarly excellence: Demonstrable commitment to excellence and mentorship in academic- and practice-based research and scholarship.
  • Collaboration and relationship-building skills: Evidence of successful collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. Experience maintaining relationships with community organizations, funding agencies, and other government, industry, and institutional partners. A history of collaborative relationships across diverse academic disciplines.
  • Commitment to Loyola’s enduring values: A record of action or leadership regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, multiculturalism, anti-racism, and racial justice. Proficiency in communicating and collaborating with diverse groups.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills: Inclination and ability to listen to and learn from others, to interact and communicate with a broad range of constituents, and to generate consensus.
  • Commitment to community: A deep commitment to community engagement and record of positive impact on underserved communities.
  • Advocacy: Ability to represent the Parkinson School, to articulate its mission effectively to internal and external audiences, and to enhance the school’s public presence, impact, and reach.
  • Operational and administrative experience: Proven ability or demonstrable potential to build, manage, and lead a team, preferably in a complex, interdisciplinary academic or research environment. Demonstrated financial, budgetary, and personnel management acumen.
