Job Summary
The Teaching Assistant, ASL assists faculty and students in a lab/classroom environment by providing academic support for student learning and engagement, and performing clerical and administrative duties in
support of faculty in the Human Services Department. The Teaching Assistant provides American Sign Language (ASL) tutoring to students and maintains student records.
Classroom Support
- Provides classroom assistance to faculty, adjuncts and students. Prepares lab stations upon request and assists with class coverage as needed. Makes scheduling arrangements for classrooms and equipment and assists in maintaining equipment used in the classroom. Assists with the collection and correlation of materials. Participates as a part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students. Collaborates with faculty for course development and content, tests, quizzes, and other support needs. Performs other duties to support teaching function for lecture, lab and distance learning classes. Prepares visual aids and grades exams.
- Tutor students taking American Sign Language courses and helps students improve communication in ASL. Answers general questions, provides information to students, and serves as a liaison to promote good public relations between the students and faculty members.
- Provides technical and administrative support to faculty, adjuncts, and Chairperson. Makes scheduling arrangements for classrooms and equipment. Maintains records pertaining to the ASL general operations and confidentiality of student records and other sensitive information.
- Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.
- High school diploma.
- The ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience mentoring or tutoring ASL Learners.
- State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
- Attends all department meetings and required trainings.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for periods of time, stands, and walks. Employee converses in ASL, verbally, or manually with others in person as well as by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.
- Normal office working conditions. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices. May be required to travel to Columbus State regional campuses as needed
