Overview
The San Diego State University Pre-College Institute (PCI) promotes college access and completion for under-served students through excellence and innovation in education. Pre-College Institute comprises 32 staff members which include management and support personnel.

Under the direct supervision of the PCI Executive Director, the Work-Study Internship Coordinator is responsible for cooperating with UB/HCOP Staff in managing the UB/HCOP Summer Academy enrollment process; for the development of a STEM work-study research internships and the pre-internships initiative for low-income and/or potential first-generation college-bound high school students. The incumbent uses independent analysis and judgment to develop, coordinate, and supervise complex and varied administrative tasks to provide exemplary work-study opportunities for high school students in collaboration with the campus community and PCI's university and laboratory partners. The position encompasses three major areas of responsibility: Internship development and coordination, employer relations, and student/academic department relations. The incumbent will secure internship placements for students according to their interests and the availability of internship positions.


Responsibilities
Program Development (Pre-Summer Academy planning) 40%
  • Develop or refine the present protocol to review the adequacy of placements after each Summer.
  • Develop or refine the present timeline and track the completion of tasks needed to set up the program and implement it during the summer.
  • Develop or refine the present protocol and advising approach to work with each of the UB/HCOP students in the summer to assess their progress and to make changes in the condition of their placements weekly.
  • Develop or refine the present protocol for interviewing and assessing present UB/HCOP sophomores and juniors for their interest and appropriateness to be part of the UB/HCOP internship program.
  • Develop or refine the present communication and systems strategy to implement a six-week intensive STEM internship and pre-internship for sixty UB high school students to include:
    • Re-contact previous mentors/work-study internship site contact person(s) to re-establish program commitments for each upcoming summer.
    • Research and develop new mentors/work-study internship sites on and off the SDSU campus, related to program objectives.
    • Develop or refine the present internship agreements with each mentor/work-study internship site to include the legal, health and safety and liability requirements for placing minors in worksites both on and off the SDSU campus.
    • Maintain open communication with key personnel in the Colleges of Science, Engineering, and Health & Human Services.
    • Develop or refine the present curriculum for work-study sessions.
    • Develop or refine the present curriculum for career exploration.
  • Serve as a liaison for the UCSD HCOP Collaborative.
  • In coordination with the PCI Executive Director or her designee, develop or refine and implement the present orientation and/or training programs for students and science/health career mentors.


Program Coordination 40%
  • Follow-up on the academic year recruitment process.
  • Coordinate and communicate the development and implementation of each phase of the program with the UB/HCOP supervisor and project team.
  • Select continuing students as participants.
  • Recruit potential new students for the program to maintain a viable waitlist to meet standards of double recruitment.
  • Match student participants in mentorships appropriate for their interests and skills.
  • Maintain weekly ongoing contact with mentors/participants to ensure mutual satisfaction and to meet program objectives.
  • Conduct site visits and observations and assessments.
  • As program liaison, meet regularly with the PI for Upward Bound and the Director of Summer Residential Programs to update, coordinate and assess the progress of the work-study internship component in meeting project objectives.
  • Design presentation of internship initiative for Awards Banquet and Internship Symposium and guide students in the development of their presentations.
    Recruit, select, train, and supervise a Summer Assistant.
  • Meet with work-study students at least once per week.
  • Liaise with Curriculum Coordinator for adequacy of course offerings for interns and their scheduling.
  • Assist in marketing the services and programs by developing appropriate materials as well as advertising special events.
  • Assist production of program material and informational publications.


Program Assistance 20% Summer
  • Transport students to and from mentorships sites as needed.


Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION
  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • 3-years of progressively responsible experience in an office or administrative environment
