They will attend course orientation, closing ceremony and course trainings; assist live instruction by monitoring chat and answering student questions; grade student homework; attend weekly check-in briefs and provide final course feedback to both students and WGYP team.

Job Description

Background:

Wharton Global Youth Program collaborates with the National Education Equity Lab and SteppingStone in an effort to educate and inspire students in historically underserved communities, through an online course Essentials of Personal Finance. This course, led by Professor David Musto, is designed to teach personal finance concepts and financial decision-making to high school students. Across 10 weeks, students learn everything from defining and calculating simple and compound interest, to how the U.S. tax system works, to exploring ways to fund higher education and negotiate the best available financial aid packages. Summary of Work:

Wharton Global Youth Program invites you to apply to serve as a teaching assistant in this course. Teaching Assistants will be paired with a graduate teaching fellow and have a designated high school(s) to work with. They will attend course orientation, closing ceremony, and course trainings; assist live instruction by monitoring chat and answering student questions; grade student homework; attend weekly check-in briefs; and provide final course feedback to both students and WGYP team.

Working Hours Commitment: 0.5-2 hours per week, 17-22 hours in total in a semester. **A TA can support multiple Teaching Fellows depending on course schedule, which can bring the weekly working hours to 5-10.**

Weekly Duties:
  • Pair up with a teaching fellow and assist live instruction by monitoring chat and answering student questions, for 10 weeks in a semester.
  • Attend a weekly check-in meeting with the whole teaching team.
  • Grade students' participation and discussion submissions.
  • Answer student questions through Canvas.


Training:
  • Dr. Musto and WGYP team will provide 1 hour of training on using the developed course materials (e.g. slides, quizzes, discussion prompts)
  • Week 10 features a Wharton Learning Lab simulation Hearts. 1 hour of training from Wharton Learning Lab will be provided.


Qualifications:
  • Current undergraduate juniors and seniors or recent graduate
  • Prior TA experience preferred but not required
  • Have a passion for teaching and social impact
  • Successful completion of background check/fingerprint review per Protecting Minors on Campus policy


Compensation: $15/hour

  • Mentorship: For each teaching pair, we would like to match an undergrad junior/senior with a current MBA student. With that, we hope to build a strong mentoring relationship. This is a great opportunity for undergrads who wish to pursue an MBA to obtain more knowledge, and also for current MBAs to pass along their experience and lessons.
