Department Summary

The Department of History at the University of Oregon, part of the Social Sciences division of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a highly accomplished community of teachers and scholars. Our expertise spans the globe -from the Pacific Northwest and the United States to Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, the Middle East, and Africa - and extends across human history, from ancient and medieval times through to the early twenty-first century. Our scholars are engaged in teaching and research projects that examine the myriad ways in which religion, ethnicity, race, class, and gender have shaped the patterns of human experience. Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in the Department of History also collaborate on a wide variety of history initiatives with similarly placed University departments focusing on diverse thematic, geographic, and temporal areas.

The Department of History offers degrees (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) at the undergraduate level as well as Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the graduate level. A group of over two dozen scholars and teachers with a passion for understanding the past in all its dimensions, our distinguished and innovative faculty hold several joint appointments with University administration, the Oregon Humanities Center, and the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, to name just a few. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our faculty and the broad range of our course offerings and research projects. Position Summary

The Department of History at the University of Oregon seeks to hire a Postdoctoral Scholar in Public History, beginning in Fall 2023. The Postdoctoral Scholar in Public History will deepen engagements between our Department and public institutions in the region and beyond, will further student engagement with experiential learning, will collaborate with students in joint ventures producing public-facing cultural resources, will pursue their own research, and will join a vibrant community of shared inquiry

This position is for one year and may be renewable for a second. Scholars working on any dimension of public history will be considered. We seek a scholar who has a vision of the university's role in the public and creative and innovative strategies for making that vision a reality. The scholar will demonstrate evidence of long-standing experience working with partners outside of the academy to bring learning to a larger audience. Their engagement in public history might include but is not limited to digital humanities; writing for public-facing audiences; working with archives, libraries, special collections, and museums; experience with collaborative and interpretative programming; work with other non-profit or governmental institutions; podcasts, radio, or other media. In addition to developing and disseminating their own scholarship, the postdoctoral scholar will be expected to make at least three public presentations, attend History Department seminars, collaborate with History students on producing a co-authored cultural resource, teach four courses, and mentor and assist students in applications for internships and funding.

The History Department provides a rich intellectual community for students and scholars. In addition to our History Department Seminar, we also organize a monthly "History Pub" in collaboration with the Lane County History Museum. At UO, we benefit from rich collections and partners in the Knight Library, Special Collections and University Archives, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and Digital Scholarship Services (DSS).
