POSITION PURPOSE

The Post Office Assistant will be tasked with providing outstanding customer service and ensuring efficient post office operations. This role consists of varying responsibilities including mail sorting and processing, mail delivery, managing inventory and supplies and assisting with administrative tasks. The individual will work closely with the Printing and Mailing Supervisor to maintain daily operations of the post office in Reid Campus Center and assist with the mailroom in Boyer House. This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week throughout the 12 months of the year.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Receiving, sorting and delivering mail and packages to Whitman students, faculty and staff.
  • Providing counter customer service, including selling postage for letters and parcels.
  • Responding to telephone calls regarding Post Office operations.
  • Assisting in the supervision of student post office workers.
  • Preparing the Post Office for summer and the beginning of academic year operations.
  • Assisting the Boyer House mailroom with bulk mailings and other tasks as needed.
  • Transporting mail between campus and local USPS office.
  • Operating the golf cart for campus deliveries and to distribute posters on campus.
  • Helping to train student workers to interact effectively with customers and efficiently handle daily mail.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to learn and understand postage rates and regulations, operate the cash register and handle money accurately.
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficient computer skills to operate the computerized mailroom equipment.
  • Physical ability move cartons weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to follow direction from the supervisor and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced, often noisy environment without losing focus or concentration.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma with some experience with routine tasks.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record in order to drive both a van and golf cart.
