Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) Curator, this position performs a wide range of complex library services in a highly collaborative, small team environment supporting the day-to-day operations of the AGSL. The Library Assistant is responsible for hiring, coordinating and supervising student employees, providing administrative support for the AGSL Curator and staff and all aspects of collection management. The person often acts as first contact with the public, is expected to have the knowledge and ability to handle routine information needs and helps facilitate the AGSL's active outreach programs.
Job Responsibilities:
- Supports the day to day operations of AGSL by providing
guidance in the use of library information resources, operations,
or by acquiring, preparing and preserving library information
resources for use.
- Interprets policies and procedures to answer non-routine
questions and resolve complex issues.
- Utilizes designated library systems, tools, standards, and
practices to locate, retrieve, and organize; and/or describe, edit,
preserve and reformat a variety of library information
resources.
- May create invoices, process complex orders, and resolve any
purchasing discrepancies.
- Conducts reference searches to locate relevant materials and
answer questions as needed.
- Utilizes library software and systems to retrieve, enter and
report on data using a wide variety of applications.
- Uses independent judgement to provide complex library services,
and acts as a resource to other library staff.
- Hires, trains, and guides student employees, monitors student
workflows and budgets.
- Contributes to the development of policies and
procedures.
- Participates in committee work within the library and the
university.
Minimum Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree
- 1 year experience working in a professional setting.
- Evidence of experience working in an academic library
environment, including collection management
- Evidence of knowledge of library management systems, preferably
Ex Libris Alma
- Evidence of ability to creatively manage active social media
presence.
- Evidence of working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 suite,
including Teams and Sharepoint
- Evidence of knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Evidence of experience hiring, training, and guiding student
employees
- Evidence of working knowledge of Wordpress or other website CMS
software
Competencies: - Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Evidence of excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, research
and organizational skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with students, staff, faculty and patrons.
- Evidence of ability to work in a team environment as well as
independently.
- Evidence of a good grasp of and strong interest in learning new
computer software and hardware skills
- Physical ability for handling of maps, books, atlases (able to
lift 30lbs above head and to retrieve and file large, bulky folders
from map case drawers)
