Sr. Digital Product Owner & Community of Practice Lead

JOB SUMMARY

The Sr Product Owner & Community Practice Lead reports to the deputy CIO and associate vice president for engagement and experience, oversees direction and strategy for premier enterprise digital applications and experiences. Additionally, this role creates a community of practice for product owners across Information Technology Services (ITS) and the broader Northeastern IT community. The Sr Product Owner & Community Practice Lead is dedicated to creating positive customer experiences and using university resources wisely with technology offerings.

The Sr Product Owner & Community Practice Lead makes prudent and strategic decisions to help drive the roadmaps of digital applications and related technologies, carefully aligning to the Northeastern 2025 academic plan and current and emerging university priorities. The Sr Product Owner & Community Practice Lead maintains a strong working knowledge of major university and information technology services and resources, and collaborates with stakeholders, project partners, and development teams to ensure work is executed on schedule and with a high degree of quality. They may manage additional staff.

The Sr Product Owner & Community Practice Lead ensures that feedback and requests from the customer base, along with the goals of university leadership, drives priority and scope of work. They are the primary campus-facing resource for the applications within their purview.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required or related relevant experience. Familiarity with Agile processes, and 3 or more years of experience working in IT preferred. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to lead matrixed teams.

The position requires a logical and structured approach to troubleshooting and decision making with an emphasis on delivering exceptional digital customer experiences. Candidates that can articulate areas of innovation and forward thinking preferred. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are required. Candidates must possess the ability to synthesize information across product lines and teams and transform it into effective strategies to advance key priorities and initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Product Owner 50%
  • Provides forward-thinking direction, and synthesizes technology efforts across departments to make strong, responsible decisions
  • Anticipates university technology needs and direction of digital platforms
  • Curates product backlogs and provides direction on priorities for product and technical teams to ensure the most efficient and effective approach to application development
  • Supports needs of the deputy CIO and associate vice president for engagement and experience, and ITS senior leaders with activities relating to business cases and justification on project resource allocation decisions
  • Builds strong relationships with key campus partners and service providers
  • Maintains an accessible positioning to members of the university community and is responsive to their needs; aligning these needs with enterprise supported services and scalable practices
  • Self-directs and effortlessly moves between working as an independent contributor to participating fully as a member of a project or work team


Community of Practice Lead 30%
  • Liaise with colleagues engaged in product ownership activities to provide recommendations on best practices, process improvement, assessment and feedback practices, and strategic alignment
  • Authors best practices that are repeatable by others serving in product owner roles
  • Ensures programmatic approach to implementing community of practice values and ideals. Coaches other product-oriented roles to exemplify information technology services core values and strive to achieve organizational goals
  • Visualizes and communicates critical components and defines product roadmaps with respect to objectives and priorities


Assessment, Engagement, and Reporting 20%
  • Evaluates and measures progress of release iterations to highlight impact to institution
  • Collaborates with student experience interns and solicits feedback from application audiences via surveys, focus groups, and interviews to inform products
  • Reports to leadership on progress and success of products
