Scope of Job:
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair for the Department of Family Medicine. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice President, UT Health RGV, the Chair will be responsible for building and maintaining a robust clinical practice, research programs, high quality graduate medical education programs, medical student education, and a collegial interactive culture. This leader will be expected to divide their time between administrative leadership while maintaining a clinical practice and helping to lead UT Health RGV's value-based payment roadmap and strategy.   • Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department of Family Medicine in collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine and hospital/clinical affiliates.
  • Ensure that the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical, educational and research missions of the School of Medicine
  • Assure that excellent education and advanced training is delivered to medical students, Family Medicine residents and postdoctoral fellows, as well as other learners as indicated.
  • Define and lead strategy that expands and strengthens the Department's research portfolio, provides for deliberate extramural funding investment into research activities and priorities, and supports principal investigators, clinical research teams, and other faculty.
  • As the active leader for the department's patient care mission, ensure department productivity and net patient collections are sustainable, allow for growth, and meeting financial/benchmark expectations.
  • Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the Department budget and profitability plan, including all funding sources, managing financial assets, and ensuring compliance with grant, legislative and institutional guidelines, ensure the department is not operating at a financial deficit or required subsidy.
  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain outstanding and diverse faculty. Ensure an atmosphere of support, inclusion, and equity.
  • Establish and operationalize the primary care component of the UT Health RGV Value-based contracting/payment strategy and roadmap, partnering with other clinical/service line leaders.
  • Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients of UT Health RGV. Lead the management of physician staffing for the out-patient clinic and in-patient services at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by others of same level of training and experience. Serve as a role model practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.
  • Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in Family Medicine for learners rotating through the services. Develop and implement specific continuing education programs pertaining to medicine and cancer care.Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activities to enhance the academic environment. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities as assigned. May necessitate instructing, through written or verbal communication, research support personnel in protocol implementation. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Candidates must possess a terminal Degree of MD, be board certified in Family Medicine, qualified for appointment of the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor at an LCME accredited medical school and eligible for medical license in the state of Texas.

    • An outstanding record of scientific achievement, grant support, scholarly accomplishments and mentoring commensurate with meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor.• Experience with primary care service line leadership, value-based payor systems and improved revenue performance tied to value-based programs.• Dynamic leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and keen vision are required.• A widely recognized national reputation in their field.• Ability to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability across the Rio Grande Valley.• Significant leadership experience and demonstrated success as a manager at the Chair, Associate Director, Director, or program leader level gained within an academic medical center, including successful experience in the recruitment, retention, and management of researchers and clinicians.• Strong organizational, management, financial, and budgetary skills with the ability to bring scientific leadership and organization innovation to the management of people and processes.• A demonstrated ability to think strategically with a vision of how to develop clinical services, research, and education for the future while keeping an eye on the details of the implementation; can articulate a vision that will promote and integrate research, care, and education across UTRGV and the community.• A proven background in recruitment, mentoring, and development of outstanding academic and administrative leadership.• A dedicated leader and mentor to students, scientists, clinicians, and staff.• A distinguished national presence in one’s discipline as evidenced by such activity as peer-reviewed publications, major journal editorial responsibility, a senior officer position in one’s major national organization, or equivalent experience.• A proven ability to build strong teams, as well as to work as a team member with one’s colleagues in management and in team leadership positions with one’s direct reports.• An ability to grow revenue and attract external funding from institutions and individuals, specific experience with donor fundraising a plus.• A commitment to and demonstrated results in the advancement of diversity and inclusion in current organization.• A demonstrated record of building strong teams, both within and across disciplines. Evidence of support for interdisciplinary research and clinical program development is highly valued.• Experience or ability to nurture and grow a successful residency program.

    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
    require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
    performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
    and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
    §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
    Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
    135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
    Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
    and at least 135 days in length.
