ASUM Legal Services invites applications for an Attorney I (Staff Attorney) . The Staff Attorney will work under the supervision and direction of the Director of ASUM Legal Services to provide legal assistance to the UM student body, to ASUM Agencies, and to UM student groups. Responsibilities include providing legal advice, limited scope legal assistance, and full representation in a wide range of legal issues. Common practice areas include landlord/tenant, consumer protection, family law, and criminal defense. Responsibilities include meeting with clients, researching legal issues, drafting persuasive and informative legal documents, appearing in court and litigating on behalf of clients, and otherwise advocating for clients formally and informally. The staff attorney will also be expected to perform administrative tasks related to their cases, engage in outreach for ASUM Legal Services, and collaborate with other ASUM agencies, the Student Senate, and student organizations.

This position will supervise law students at the direction of ASUM Legal Services Director and assist in management of administrative office staff. It also requires incumbent to continually seek and participate in training in relevant areas as needed and required by the Director.

Required Skills
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with college students, clients, attorneys, law enforcement, and judges.
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to provide legal advice, limited scope assistance, and full representation on legal issues including family law, landlord-tenant law, and consumer law, including researching legal issues, drafting persuasive legal documents, negotiating and otherwise advocating for clients at hearings and informally.
  • Must exhibit professionalism and high ethical standards.
  • Must be able to work with Microsoft Word, online email and calendaring and research, and case management programs.
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to State Bar of Montana.

  • Two or more years legal experience
  • Litigation experience preferred

About ASUM Legal Services and UM

ASUM Legal Service’s primary mission is to provide low cost legal services to activity fee paying UM students. These services include education, legal information, legal advice, brief assistance, and full representation regarding their legal issues, pursuant to ASUM Legal Services policy. ASUM Legal Service also provides consultation on legal matters to ASUM Agencies and Student Groups.

Work Schedule: 0.75-1.0 FTE (30-40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year, weekly hours can be flexed to accommodate workload.

Salary: $36.06/hr.

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
