Job Description Summary
The Web and Application Developer is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Museum's public website, intranet, and other digital resources. The position reports to the Manager of Digital Records, Archives, and Publications and supports internal operations as well as online platforms. This role is responsible for developing mission-critical, database-driven resources, websites and applications, and for auditing and analyzing systems performance, stability, backup processes, and security measures. Penn Museum strives to meet or exceed standards for digital accessibility, and the Web and Application Developer will advocate for best practices for both accessibility and user experience. This role works collaboratively with subject-matter experts and content creators across the Museum.

The Web and Application Developer will also work with IT and make recommendations for hardware and software upgrades relating to servers and applications, with occasional telephone/desk-side support for both PC and Mac environments expected. This role will identify standards and policy needs, making recommendations for staff and user groups; create systems documentation including setup, maintenance/administration, and user tasks; and provide ad-hoc database administration.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop, document, and maintain internal and external database-driven websites and web applications, prioritizing user experience, accessibility, scalability, and sustainability in collaboration with other web team members, internal stakeholders, and content creators.
  • Ensure security, stability, performance of the web and intranet resources; research and adapt to trends and emerging technologies, and optimize as needed.
  • Develop, document, and maintain web back end, including server and database administration, CMSs, databases, APIs and other integrations.
  • Support daily content updates, ensure quality control, data standardization, and accessibility compliance.
  • Maintain and optimize website and database analytics.


Qualifications
  • BS in computer science or related field and 3-5 years' experience in web development required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a combination of front- and back-end roles or full-stack is preferred.
  • Proficient in PHP, HTML, javascript, CSS, SEO optimization and best practices; understanding of relational databases and semantic data models. (Competency using Python and/or R is helpful.) Proficiency using Joomla! (other content management systems such as Drupal are relevant), MYSQL, Apache, SSL, Windows Server, and in developing web and database integrations with partner APIs.
  • Proven track record for on-time deliverables and an ability to adapt within complex project timelines. Familiarity with project management platforms and ticket-tracking systems is required. Experience leading collaborative projects and PMI certification are preferred
  • Strong organization and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively in teams with varied expertise (developers, designers, media and other content creators). Ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical collaborators.
  • Excellent documentation practices and creative problem-solving skills using code and process and/or workflow; learn quickly and master diverse web technologies as institutional needs evolve.
  • Understanding of cloud platform services like AWS and understanding of linked open data integrations preferred
