Description

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional early career physician to join the Departments of Internal Medicine and/or Population Health and Livestrong Cancer Institutes' Cancer Prevention and Control program as a clinician-investigator.

BACKGROUND

Dell Medical School's mission is to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy by:
  • Educating leaders who transform health care;
  • Evolving new models of person-centered, multidisciplinary care that reward value;
  • Advancing innovation from discovery to outcomes;
  • Improving health in our community as a model for the nation; and
  • Redesigning the academic health environment to better serve society.

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has been made to enable its development and success. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in health services research, and a strong focus on improving health equity.

The Department of Internal Medicine, under the leadership of Inaugural Chair Michael Pignone, is one of the largest departments at Dell Medical School with over 125 regular faculty members. Internal Medicine faculty are represented by 11 specialty-specific divisions and 5 associate chairs. In addition to providing innovative clinical care in multiple practice sites, the Department sponsors the Internal Medicine and Dermatology residency programs and fellowship programs in 5 specialty areas. Kevin Hackshaw serves as Associate Chair of Research and helps support a robust portfolio of investigator-initiated and clinical trials-based research with a strong focus on health equity.

In collaboration with a diverse set of community and University of Texas at Austin partners, the Department of Population Health, under the leadership of Chair Navkiran Shokar, focuses on improving the overall health and wellbeing of residents of Austin, Travis County and Central Texas, as well as creating a national model for population health engagement, research and policy. The department has 18 regular and 83 total faculty, organized around 4 divisions including family medicine, health informatics, data analytics and Epidemiology, community engagement and health equity and family medicine. Investigators conduct community-based research that intersects with public health, and primary care, working with partners to develop, test and disseminate new models of value-based care that improve patients' experiences and health outcomes in the landscape of their lives.

The Livestrong Cancer Institutes, in conjunction with the Livestrong Foundation, was launched in partnership with Dell Medical School in 2014. Under the leadership of Inaugural Director S. Gail Eckhardt, MD, Livestrong Cancer Institutes (LCI) builds on the knowledge gained from Livestrong's unique relationship with cancer patients and survivors derived from 10 years of survey data, community outreach, and direct service provision to those affected by cancer to create a scalable, replicable set of best practices across the continuum of cancer care including prevention; screening and detection; treatment; and survivorship and end of life care.

The Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) program is one of the cornerstones of the LCI. CPC currently includes 8 investigators who have garnered over $8 million in grant funding. The program is led by Dr. Michael Pignone, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and Dr. Navkiran Shokar, Chair of the Department of Population Health. Dr. Pignone is a national expert in cancer prevention and control, who has a long-standing track record of successful grant-funded research and mentorship of junior and mid-career investigators. Dr. Pignone's specific areas of interest include colorectal cancer screening implementation, shared decision making for several cancer prevention and treatment services, and the use of modeling to guide organization of clinical services to provide high value, patient-centered care. Dr. Shokar is a distinguished cancer and prevention control researcher who focuses on addressing disparities in screening detectable cancers in vulnerable groups, especially Hispanic populations.
