Position Purpose

Dartmouth seeks a talented, creative, and proven fundraising executive to help chart the next chapter in the university’s development program as Vice President for Development. At Dartmouth the development program is the key agent in the university’s strategy to advance its mission through a highly engaged and philanthropically supportive global community. This moment holds exceptional promise for the right individual as the university will soon welcome its 19th President, Sian Beilock, in June who will launch a new phase of planning and initiatives. Under the direction of outgoing President Phil Hanlon, the university has increased annual fundraising by more than 100% in less than a decade and is committed to accelerating mission impact by growing private gift revenues further.
The Vice President for Development will provide strategic oversight to Dartmouth’s comprehensive development program with the goal of inspiring new levels of engagement, commitment, and philanthropic support from the global Dartmouth community. The Vice President for Development (VP) will assess, plan, and oversee execution of most aspects of Dartmouth’s development program, including the Dartmouth College Fund, major giving and regional programs (70,000 undergraduate alumni and parents), deferred giving, and corporate and foundation support. (Revenues from these units exceeded $100 million in FY22.) The VP works in close coordination with other fundraising leaders on campus, including the Vice President for Presidential Initiatives and Principal Gifts, and the Chief Development Officers of the Schools of Business (Tuck), Engineering (Thayer), and Medicine (Geisel.)
The Vice President reports to the Senior Vice President for Advancement and serves as a member of Advancement’s Senior Leadership Team alongside four other members: The SVP’s Chief of Staff, the Chief Operating Officer, and the VPs for Principal Gifts and Alumni Relations. The VP often works in partnership with the Board of Trustees Advancement Committee and other volunteer committees committed to raising resources for the institution.

Dartmouth Fundraising: A Historic Record of Achievement

Dartmouth benefits from highly motivated staff and volunteer organizations that have consistently inspired new approaches to fundraising and stewardship. In the nineteen fifties, Dartmouth was one of the first universities to model the comprehensive capital campaign. In the 1980s, a group of volunteers reinvented the Dartmouth College Fund to become one of the most productive annual funds in the country, regularly generating annual participation of 36% and higher in contrast to declining national trends. And in the past decade, Dartmouth pioneered new levels of support from women, entrepreneurs, and young alumni that are now the subject of national study. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education has recognized Dartmouth in each of the past three years with national awards of distinction for program performance.
In this context, Dartmouth launched its most recent campaign, The Call to Lead, in 2018 and will conclude it in June 2023. The campaign has outperformed all expectations and will deliver more than $3.6 billion in investments toward key initiatives, transforming the physical campus with a major series of capital investments and adding more than $1 billion to Dartmouth’s $8 billion endowment.
