Executive Director Research Computing
About the Opportunity
This job description is intended to describe the general nature and
level of work being performed by people assigned to this

The Executive Director, Research Computing services is responsible
for the development and delivery of research and computationally
intensive academic and high-performance computing infrastructure
and services to Northeastern researchers, teaching faculty, and
students throughout the university's global network, as well as
their collaborators at other institutions. Under the direction of
Northeastern research and technology leadership, and in
consultation with researchers, the executive director enables
innovation through development of leading-edge services and
delivery of strong, faculty-centered, efficient support for
established research computing functions. They supervise a team
focused on research computing and leads collaborations related to
research computing services.
The Executive Director will be a key strategic partner with
Northeastern faculty, research departments, central and distributed
information technology organizations, and programs to advance the
institution's research mission. They will work alongside the
university CIO to create and maintain a research computing
strategic plan to support faculty research throughout the global
network. These efforts will include that the executive director
develop a deep and broad understanding of faculty, student, and
staff expectations; understand the trends and disruptive forces in
research computing; build a shared, aspirational research computing
support strategy for the university; and develop a plan to bring
this strategy to fruition.
To ensure that essential services are provided to the university
community, the executive director may be required to work outside
their regular working hours and travel as needed.
- Master's or Ph.D. in a field with a strong scientific computing
component and five years of experience working in a large-scale,
advanced research computing environment, with a minimum of three
years working in a research computing team.
- History of cultivating a collaborative strategy, with the
ability to establish and maintain strong relationships that
positively influence others to move toward a common vision or

orchestration techniques is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Service Owner 20%
Serve as service owner for all research computing services,
ensuring appropriate researcher involvement, governance, service
documentation, delivery, and support. Drive service strategy and
design, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
Research Computing Services 20%
Adapt and expand research computing services in support of
computationally intensive academic courses, including providing
training and support for students and teaching faculty in the
classroom and online.
Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) 20%
Collaborate with Northeastern faculty, fellows, and the
Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) on
development of reusable environments and holistic computational
solutions for researchers that expand the impact of Northeastern
research within and beyond the university.
Research Computing Leadership 20%
Lead research computing collaborations that benefit Northeastern,
especially related to the MGHPCC, and/or related regional or
national research computing infrastructure.
Research & Academic Computing Projects 10%
In alignment with Northeastern research, education, and technology
strategies and in conjunction with IT Project Board/IT Council
governance bodies, plan, propose, and implement Northeastern
research and academic computing projects.
Staff Management 10%
Recruit, manage, and develop research computing staff with the
appropriate skills and expertise to excel in the Northeastern
environment across the global network, cultivating a
