Position Summary

The main function of this position is to manage, plan, and promote a variety of co- and extra-curricular programs that are essential to creating opportunities and community for students in the University Honors Program. The position requires managing and executing communications strategies with respect to faculty, students, and alumni, including planning and carrying out fundraising campaigns primarily for the University Honors Program, but also for the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning. The holder of the position manages Honors House, including budget planning and activity development, hiring, and managing student workers and faculty advisors. The UHP Program Coordinator also manages the Honors program passport program known as Honors Connect, along with designing and tracking its use in the relevant institutional database systems. This position project manages the two annual graduation ceremonies for the Honors Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Organize co-curricular and extra-curricular programming, such as lectures, workshops, peer-mentoring, field trips, community service opportunities, and social events for University Honors students.
  • Manager of the Honors House, which involves being the primary point of contact with NIU’s Housing & Residential Services, having budget oversight, selecting, training, managing House and activity student leaders, recruiting students, and working closely with faculty advisors.
  • Planning and coordinating alumni-related programming and alumni relations, including fundraising campaigns.
  • Project manager for Honors day (fall and spring), which are major signature events to recognize students graduating with honors and award winners and involve budget managing, program planning, and overseeing execution.
  • Promotion to and communication with students through weekly announcements, social media, and other channels and to campus and alumni through the Honors newsroom and monthly newsletters.
  • Managing Honors and OSEEL social media channels and newsroom(s), collecting, writing, editing and publishing stories for various internal and external audiences.
  • Overseeing and managing Honors Connect, which involves collaborating with campus partners, entering opportunities in Suitable (co-curricular tracking app), and working to promote DEI programming that is relevant for Honors Connect.
  • Completes special projects and assists with other University Honors Program events (e.g., recruitment, new student events, orientation, etc.) as needed.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position. (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
  3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.
