Assistant/ Associate/ Full Teaching Professor

About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. Through its research, teaching, and engagement missions, the college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and partners around the globe. We are strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia. Successful faculty in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities will be dynamic and innovative scholars with a record of research and teaching excellence and a commitment to improved equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong candidates for this position will have the expertise, knowledge, and skills to build their research, pedagogy, and curriculum in ways that reflect and enhance this commitment.

Responsibilities:

The English Department Writing Program of Northeastern University seeks to fill multiple benefits-eligible, full-time positions for Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professors, beginning in September 2023. The NU Writing Program is an award-winning program that serves first-year and upper-level students and includes more than 75 full-time, part-time, post-doctoral, and graduate student teachers. Teaching Professors design and teach first-year and advanced writing courses, including courses in writing for the sciences, the health professions, engineering and computer science professions, social sciences, arts, humanities, and business professions. We also welcome applicants who can teach creative writing, including creative non-fiction. The program values instructor autonomy and does not work from common syllabi or required texts, but instead shares 12 student learning goals. Northeastern Teaching Professors also have access to professional development funding and a variety of professional development activities.

Full-time teaching load is three courses per semester. In addition to teaching, Teaching Professors are expected to serve on various department, college, and university committees and to pursue professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in Rhetoric and Composition or related field required by the appointment start date.

Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education. This is an untenured, but continuing position with the possibility of promotion to Associate and Full Teaching Professor, as well as multi-year (3 year and 5 year) contracts.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to and experience in undergraduate teaching and will have expertise in areas of writing in the disciplines, anti-racist or decolonial pedagogy, multilingual writing, community engagement/community-based teaching, online instruction, and/or working with digital media.

Documents to Submit:

Applications should include a cover letter that addresses the applicant's interest in and qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae, diversity statement, teaching statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness (including a syllabus from a relevant course) and contact information for at least two letters of recommendation.

In the diversity statement, please describe how you can support Northeastern's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Describe how your teaching, service, research, and/or leadership (as applicable) has supported the success of students and/or colleagues; and/or describe the impact others have had on you as relating to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Questions should be addressed to Prof. Laurie Nardone, Search Committee Chair, l.nardone@northeastern.edu.
