Job Description

Based in the Greater Washington, D.C. metro area, the visual content creator conceptualizes, shoots, and edits videos and photos. The videographer/photographer develops story ideas, contacts sources for scheduling and produces content for Virginia Tech websites, the university's official social media channels, and other platforms.

The visual content creator works independently and collaboratively, as a member of the Communications and Marketing visual team and collaborates closely with the D.C. area communications team. The content creator must work independently and set priorities that allow for work on multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously.

The visual content creator will focus on the university’s activities in the D.C. area, including working with university leadership, confidential announcements, the Innovation Campus in Alexandria, the Virginia Tech Research Center—Arlington, an emerging smart construction research center in Falls Church and four other locations in the region.

The content creator will produce videos and photos that support Virginia Tech’s branding and campaigns and editorial needs, targeting and engaging a wide spectrum of audiences, including prospective and current students, alumni and donors, and industry partners.

Projects and assignments will vary and could include news-style videos, marketing videos and photos, live-streaming feeds, social media content, photos for print publications and event coverage in a variety of settings. This is a hybrid position with 3-4 onsite days per week. Occasional work on nights and weekends is required.

Required Qualifications

- Master's degree or Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience

- Experience leading, conceptualizing, shooting, and editing videos and photos.

- Work samples that demonstrate knowledge of photography, videography and editing, specifically in Adobe Premiere

- Fluency with using Canon or Nikon DSLRs to shoot images and video

Preferred Qualifications

- Degree in video production, photography, visual communication, journalism, new media. Knowledge of Virginia Tech or higher education setting

- Demonstrated skill in editing and delivering videos on tight schedules

- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines, quick turnarounds and work in a fast-paced environment

- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Mac-based systems and software

- Experience collaborating with internal and external teams and stakeholders

- Experience working with content management

- Understanding of HTML coding and responsive web design
