Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience or Bachelor’s degree with 5 years experience.
  • Familiarity with legal or regulatory documentation pertaining to Research Compliance.
  • Experience with Conflicts of Interest programs.
  • Experience with or willingness to develop expertise in Export Control regulations.
  • Willingness to acquire working knowledge for additional compliance programs that fall under the Office of Research Protections.
  • Proven attention to detail and strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to articulate complex regulatory issues to diverse audiences including students, staff, faculty and administrators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Research Protections facilitates research and creative endeavors by administering programs that provide ethical and regulatory oversight of research involving human participants, animals, recombinant DNA, export controls, intellectual property, and conflict of interest. The Office of Research Protections strives to support the responsible conduct of research as well as commercialization of research to promote the University’s mission of transmitting and applying knowledge to address the needs of society.

The Associate Director reports to the Director of Research Protections, and works collaboratively with the Sponsored Programs, Grants, Resources and Services, and Research Design and Analysis units within the Office of Research, the compliance committee members, the research community, Information Technology Services, and other units on campus to lead and support research integrity, ethics, and compliance activities.

Conflict of Interest Duties:
  1. Administer policies and procedures for the operation of the Conflicts of Interest program, including managing COI disclosures from faculty and non-faculty EHRA staff, working with the Director of Research Protections to coordinate review of research specific COI disclosures, assisting with Conflict of Interest Management Plan development and communication.
  2. Serve as an expert resource for researchers and campus community in the review, determination and management processes related to conflict of interest, conflict of commitment and external activity for pay disclosures.
  3. Develop training and education programs on Conflicts of Interest.
  4. Develop training and education programs on foreign influence and research security (e.g. NSPM -33) in collaboration with other units such as Information Technology Services.


Export Controls Duties:
  1. Administer the Export Controls program and manage policies, procedures, and certifications related to export controls and compliance.
  2. Conduct screenings for Export Controls regulations of equipment and non-U.S. citizens, determine whether further investigation is needed and coordinate necessary reviews.
  3. Develop relationships and processes with other University units to meet Export Controls requirements.
  4. Work closely with Sponsored Projects to ensure compliance with Export Controls requirements.
  5. Develop training and education programs on Export Controls.
  6. Participate in national organizations and listservs to maintain awareness of regulatory changes and build expertise.

Additional Duties:
  1. Provide support to other research compliance programs such as the Human Subjects Research Protection, Institutional Animal Care and Use, Institutional Biosafety and Responsible Conduct of Research programs, when necessary.
  2. Participate in training, outreach and other duties as assigned in support of research compliance education and monitoring.
  3. Assist the Director with development and communication of policy, procedures, and guidelines for the unit.
  4. Serve as contact for the Office of Research Protections in the Director’s absence and provide guidance for the unit when needed ; maintain working knowledge of unit areas.
  5. Other duties as assigned

Typical physical demands of a professional research position within a university with the majority of work is administrative in nature, requiring extended periods at a desk/computer. Departmental visits and presentations require in-person visits across campus.
