Job Summary

The Marine Operations Manager is responsible for the oversight and operation of the Bowdoin College marine vessels and the supervision of all marine vessel operator. These responsibilities include:
  • Working collaboratively with all Bowdoin programs operating marine vessels, including Coastal Studies Program, Biology, EOS, the Bowdoin Scientific Station at Kent Island, and the sailing and crew teams within the Athletic Department.
  • Safe operation of marine vessels owned by Bowdoin College. Collaborate with faculty, the Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety, and other staff to develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures and safety procedures for operating Bowdoin vessels.
  • Year-round preparation and maintenance of the marine vessels.
  • Identifying and adhering to all applicable state and federal guidelines, codes, and regulations. Maintain and adhere to all Bowdoin College boating policies in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Communicating policies to appropriate campus constituencies.
  • Developing, facilitating, and/or conducting all on-line, safety and practical training for students, faculty, and staff and maintain training records.
  • Establishing and retaining records of all float-plans in communication with Bowdoin Security.
  • Work with the Coastal Studies Caretaker to assist with any shore-based issues involving waterfront activities.
Pay rate: $30.00 – $34.00/per hour (Eligible for overtime and shift differentials). This position will require a criminal background + motor vehicle record check and a pre-placement physical.


Education/Skills Requirements

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work tasks and accomplish them efficiently and accurately.
  • Strong customer service skills and excellent communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills and and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and E-mail.
  • Willingness and initiative to learn new computer applications.
  • Ability to successfully work independently.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas of study: Marine Technology, Natural Sciences and/or Conservation.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Required:
  • A minimum of a current USCG 25 Ton Master Near Coastal License and at least 3-5 years practical experience as a USCG Licensed Boat Captain.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy required.
Standard Work Days and Hours
  • Monday – Friday, equivalent of 30 hours/week, year-round (0.75 FTE ), with occasional evening and weekends as required.
  • Actual schedule to be determined with supervisor and may vary depending on season (e.g. fewer hours in winter.
  • Much of work will take place at Bowdoin’s Coastal Studies Center on Orr’s Island with frequent trips to the main campus.
