Job Summary
The Division of Student Affairs at Bowdoin College oversees an array of programs for student leadership development ranging from community and culture-building activities; athletics; volunteer and public service programs; student government and other student organizations; residential programs; and outdoor wilderness experiences. Coming out of the COVID pandemic years, Bowdoin sees the opportunity to strengthen and center leadership as a cornerstone of our student culture and co-curricular education.
The new Director of Student Leadership Development will be responsible for establishing a student leadership framework at Bowdoin that aligns design and implementation of existing and new programs. This framework will be grounded in the premise that leadership is a practical skill, necessary and critical to effecting change and making a difference, and to living an intentional and fulfilling life. As part of the work of developing this framework, the Director will lead the effort to address the following questions:
- How do we define leadership at Bowdoin and develop language and learning outcomes that cut across different departments/student leadership roles?
- How do we consistently deliver a transformational/educational leadership development experience for students? How do we build tiered experiences that move students along the leadership development ladder and better address the needs of more experienced student leaders on campus?
- How do we spark awareness of, appreciation for, and engagement with leadership as a discipline and a practice by leveraging formative student experiences?
- Manage the effort with campus partners (e.g., Student Life, Inclusion and Diversity, Athletics, CXD, Development and Alumni Relations) to define student leadership at Bowdoin and articulate a conceptual framework and language steeped in Bowdoin values and signature programming and experiences.
- Align Student Affairs leadership programs with this framework.
- Serve as a designer/consultant/instructor/facilitator for student leadership trainings.
- Support departments in creating learning objectives and assessing/modifying/sunsetting programs as needed.
- Coordinate additional programming, including possible collaborative programming with academic departments, speaker series with Development and Alumni relations, etc.
This role is a two-year term appointment with the potential to extend.
The salary range for this position is expected to be: Minimum: $95,000 – Maximum: $110,000
Education/Skills Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, alumni, staff, faculty (i.e., a range of individuals of different positions, roles, departments, experiences, ages).
- Superb communication skills—particularly facilitation and public speaking.
- Experience with program development, implementation, delivery, and assessment (or comparable experience).
- Passion for educating and developing college students and supporting them holistically and intentionally.
- Commitment to fostering a sense of belonging, and to the notion
that educating students as leaders necessitates helping them
develop skills and tools to understand, navigate, discuss, and
resolve bias, prejudice, and systematic marginalization and their
implications with nonviolent approaches.
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated progressive work experience. Experience outside of higher education highly encouraged.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in leadership education and programming,
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent/human development and/or psychology.
This is an 11-month position with the expectation of approximately 40 hours/week taking place Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Additional evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
