Job Summary

The Department of Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for an Assistant Lab Supervisor/Assistant Instructor position! This role will provide support and assistance to the Lab Supervisor/Instructor in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the PTTL facility and includes the following tasks:
  • Teach machine shop manufacturing and safety as well as welding courses.
  • Supervise and assist students, research staff and faculty who utilize the lab to manufacture research projects.
  • Maintain the lab by purchasing tools and consumable materials; and repair, update and replace lab equipment.
  • Manage class enrollment, lab access, and fiscal responsibility of lab assets, revenue and expenses.

Who We Are

The Physics Trades Teaching Lab is open year-round and provides students with the basic tools and knowledge to navigate and utilize a machine shop environment and its equipment effectively. Managed by the Department of Physics, the PTTL currently offers two classes to students from every discipline on campus: Machine Shop Technology and Beginning Welding. Class sizes are small to provide both comprehensive orientation and hands-on instruction to students and other individuals affiliated with the University as well as community members.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Machine Shop Safety and Welding Instruction:
  • This position provides safety training and instruction in both machine shop and welding courses which have been developed to ensure safety guidelines are followed, support research, and fabrication projects for the Department of Physics and the campus community. The machine shop safety course includes a comprehensive overview and hands-on instruction of both hand tools and lab machinery (lathes, mills, drills, saws, tooling, 3D printer, etc). The welding course includes a comprehensive overview and hands-on instruction in MIG and TIG welding of steel and aluminum.
  • Individuals who successfully complete the courses are allowed access and use of the PTTL facility during open lab hours with oversight and support by the Lab Supervisor.

Support and Assist Lab Supervisor/Instructor with all duties related to Lab Supervision and Management:
  • Develop, schedule, and prioritize the day-to-day operations of the PTTL facility.
  • Conduct classes and develop new curricula to address changes in technology.
  • Support open lab usage and ensure adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Provide specialized technical support to faculty and student customers to design and fabricate customized equipment and products.
  • Stay current of new developments, skills and knowledge in the field of machining and welding to maintain facility and tool organization, preventative maintenance, and equipment repair to make operations run smoothly and safely.
  • Maintain an ongoing and current spreadsheet of class participants and lab access.
  • Manage lab purchases and maintain monthly revenue and expense accountability according to department protocol.

Fabrication Coordination and Consultant:
  • At the direction of the Lab Supervisor/Instructor, the Assistant Lab Supervisor/Assistant Instructor will assist in fabrication of instruments and products for funded research, student labs, graduate student projects, and research leading to student thesis or dissertation. This includes actively teaching students how to use certain tools, providing technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques. Success in this position includes organizing, distributing, establishing priorities to meet project deadlines, training students, and verifying their work.
What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $65,000-$75,000 annually.

What We Require
  • A Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five years of experience in machining, welding, fabrication, equipment maintenance and shop organization.
What You Will Need
  • Must be approachable and patient, have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills expected in a teaching environment.
  • Detail-oriented and able to problem-solve to meet fabrication objectives, including familiarity with both inch and metric units, mathematic calculations and metalworking competency.
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM software packages and CNC milling.
  • Proficient in different welding techniques.
  • Working knowledge of computers and office equipment, Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Ability to learn and comply with University protocol in purchasing, equipment management, fiscal responsibilities and other administrative tasks.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Prior machine shop management or comparable experience with all aspects of machine shop tools and equipment. Prior experience with fiscal responsibilities such as budget adherence, forecasts, etc. Knowledge of various welding equipment; certification desired. Experience teaching and interacting with faculty and college students. Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences, with ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students from around the world.
