Job Details

As our Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) Program continues to grow, there is a need for consistent staffing of the required MJ curriculum. Students entering the MJ program initially enroll in two required courses: Law B505 Introduction to American Law and Law B550 American Legal System and Method. These courses provide an integrated introduction to the structure and principles of U.S. Law, the analytical and writing skills required for graduate students, and sources and techniques for basic legal research. After this foundation, MJ students enroll in the third required MJ course: Law A599 Legal Research Methods. This course further develops their research and analytical skills. These sequenced, required courses are currently taught in-person. We plan to increase our online capacity to serve graduate students with full-time jobs and/or caretaking responsibilities, and to remain competitive with other graduate law programs.  The MJ program is not subject to the ABA limitations governing online or hybrid education.

MJ students are also required to complete a major research paper. This requirement ensures that each student has significant experience working on a graduate-level paper that serves as a program capstone. There are currently not enough seminar offerings to meet the paper requirements for the MJ students.  We are seeking an Assistant/Associate teaching professor to:

  • Teach required, sequenced courses that focus on legal systems and research methods.
  • Teach a graduate-level writing seminar to support MJ students.
  • Teach additional courses as needed including, but not limited to, Negotiations/Alternative Dispute Resolution, Advanced reasoning and legal writing skills, legal information and document technologies, and doctrinal law courses as needed for the graduate programs.
  • Teach distance learning courses.

In addition to the serious teaching needs that would be filled by this position, this position would also serve as an Assistant/Associate program director of the MJ program. The assistant/associate director would assist in academic counseling, marketing and administration of the program. The MJ program is culturally diverse and requires a deft hand in providing academic, targeted advice.  As the current director and one of the key faculty members are close to retirement, the person in this teaching professor/assistant-associate program director role will be poised to assume broader leadership in due time.

All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

This is a 9-month position - September through June of every academic year.  This position is a non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of September 2023.

The base salary range for this position will be $10,000 - $11,110 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

  • Demonstrated record of team leadership/management
  • Candidates should have substantial legal practice expertise and admission to the bar in a U.S. jurisdiction.
