Purpose of Position

To provide customer service to the University community by ensuring a clean, sanitary, and inviting environment. Assist in the supervision of preventive maintenance, repairs, installation, and modifications of piping, plumbing fixtures, equipment, and facilities.

Responsible for a variety of systems and equipment that affect the University’s fire protection and health/life safety such as sprinkler lines, gas lines, swimming pool chemicals, sewage disposal, fire pumps, fire hydrants.

Primary Responsibilities

Assist with planning, prioritizing, assigning, supervising, and participating in the work of staff responsible for the university’s plumbing, gas, domestic water, and swimming pool maintenance.

Assist with estimating time and material for work orders and projects.

Assist with the ordering and purchasing of materials according to established guidelines and budgetary constraints.

Assist with maintaining material inventories and other records as required

Assist with establishing preventive maintenance schedules; recommending priorities of repair projects; responding to after-hours emergency situations as directed

Safely use all tools of the plumbing trade including but not limited to soldering and brazing equipment, cutting torches, pipe wrenches, electric drills, drill presses, pipe threaders, sewer machines, and power snakes

Install, service, maintain, regulate, repair, and replace plumbing lines, fixtures, fittings, and equipment to comply with the uniform plumbing code, Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ), other requirements, and state and local guidelines.

Assist with the supervision, operations, and maintenance of the swimming pool equipment located in Campus Recreation.

Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, sketches, manuals, diagrams, and contract specifications. Provide feedback on projects before and during construction, and update files and plans to reflect changes in plumbing.

Assist with the coordination and training in plumbing maintenance and safety methods, procedures, and techniques.

Qualifications

Prefer a Vocational Degree in plumbing.

1 year of supervisory/personnel management training is also strongly preferred.

Acceptable equivalency would be a high school diploma/ GED with a Plumber’s License and 5 years of related experience, one of which would be in a supervisory capacity.

Must possess:
1. valid driver’s license;
2. License to perform testing of backflow preventers
3. Journeyman Plumbing license preferred
4. basic computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
5. ability to communicate clearly both orally and written;
6. ability to work with various types of related equipment including, but not limited to, chemicals, parts washer, welders, metal lathe, cutters, grinders, chop saws, concrete coring machines, pipe threaders, drill presses, pressure jetting machines, pumps, hydraulic jacks, hot water tanks, etc.;
7. ability to stand, walk, stoop, reach, pull, kneel, push, work in confined spaces, perform work above head level for extended periods of time;
8. perform medium heavy and maximum physical exertion and lift up to 50 lbs or more on a regular basis.
