Position Overview

Primary Purpose of the Position

A significant result of the nursing shortage is the limited number of qualified nurse educators. To meet the instructional need, adjunct faculty are an integral part of the curriculum and faculty structure in the Division of Nursing ( DON ). Without adjunct faculty, the DON would not be able to meet the instructional needs of the nursing program. Adjunct faculty positions provide the DON an opportunity to hire experienced nurse educators, clinicians, and practitioners to assist in meeting the mission, vision, and objectives of the division. Adjunct faculty focus principally on excellence in instruction and engagement. In addition to their instructional responsibilities in the classroom, clinical, and/or online environments, adjunct faculty provide clinical and practicum supervision of nursing students; collaborate and develop professional relationships with healthcare agencies, professional organizations, and other constituencies. Adjunct faculty are critical to the implementation of the curriculum, instruction, and supervision of students and success in meeting learning outcomes. Adjunct faculty coach and mentor students during the academic experience and beyond.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Advanced Nurse Educator concentration prepares graduates to teach in undergraduate nursing programs and to fulfill clinical education and staff development positions in hospitals and complex educational environments. The ANE curriculum includes 39 credit hours, is taught online, and the required 240 hours of supervised education practicum may be completed in a local academic setting. Full-time students complete the curriculum in two years, while part-time completion may vary.
ANE graduates are eligible to take the National League for Nursing Certified Nurse Educator certification examination upon completion and two years of full-time employment as a nurse educator.
