Job Description

The International Student/Scholar Advisor for inbound exchange students is located in International Student & Scholar Services, and works directly with students, faculty, and staff to create and support a successful and positive experience for inbound non-degree exchange, dual-degree exchange, and short-term program students. This position requires regular liaising with NAU campus partners and the Center for Internation Education (CIE) Divisions of Education Abroad, Interdisciplinary Global Programs, International Admissions and Evaluations, International Student Retention & Inclusion and CIE Operations to support continued constructive relationships with partner institutions, promote education abroad opportunities on the NAU campus and develop educational interactions between domestic and international students.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) works with inbound international students from the point of program nomination/application, during Orientation, and then acts as their guide and advisor throughout their time on NAU's beautiful Flagstaff Mountain campus to help them navigate immigration regulations, academic adjustments, and cultural integration. ISSS also works with university departments to bring J-1 scholars and international employees to campus, enhancing research environment on-campus and supporting a positive experience in Flagstaff. NAU is ranked in IIE's Open Doors within the top 200 US institutions for international student enrollment and proud to host over 1200 international students from more than 80 countries. International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Intermediate

The International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Intermediate provides support to incoming international exchange students from the point of program nomination through departure. This position requires strengths in overseeing the overall program structure, attention to detailed information for successful student onboarding/arrival and effective communication skills to relay important information to the exchange population. The person will also assist with international student support and programming to ensure that the department is responsive to specific needs.

Student Coordination - 40%

 

 

  • Support incoming exchange students from the point of nomination, until returning home including but not limited to: navigating application process, initial immigration document issuance, course registration, immigration advising, support for arrival weekend and orientation, assistance with forms, proctoring exams, routine check in, transcripts, etc.
  • Communicate current university policies, student nomination and admission processes/deadlines with NAU partner institutions around the world.
  • Act as Inbound Student Exchange Program (ISEP) incoming student coordinator, communicate with ISEP, support application process, and report balances to Education Abroan (EA) Director.
  • Track, coordinate and finalize award status of NAU exchange student scholarships and financial commitments.
  • Liaise with Center for International Education functional divisions to ensure holistic coordination and communications across the divisions as it relates to exchange, and short-term students and specifically Education Abroad through meeting attendance, exchange balance tracking, partner communications and recruitment travel on an as needed basis.
  • Act as liaison with CIE partner departments, specifically Academic Advising, Residence Life, Student, Dining Services and Departmental Account Services.
  • Provides training to ISSS team and university partners on the specific needs of specific exchange student populations.
  • Supports response to crisis situations involving students as requested by ISSS Director and/or Assistant Director.


Student Advising - 30%

 

 

  • Independently advise students on academic support resources, university resources, adjustment issues, personal and family concerns, and in emergency situations.
  • Advise students on life events impacting immigration status and impacts of choices on legal status, also used to inform mandatory Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) reporting requirements.
  • Act as an academic advisor to all incoming exchange students and facilitate full-time course enrollment with academic advising teams.


Supportive Programming - 25%

 

 

  • Develop and support comprehensive programming with a goal of providing integrative support services for inbound exchange and short-term students to support a robust and positive experience at NAU.
  • Independently plans, leads and evaluates programming efforts meeting requirements of J-1 visa program.
  • Support peer mentorship program between inbound exchange/short-term students and NAU domestic students.
  • May act as advisor to NAU International Club, iFriends or other clubs/programs.


Other - 5%

 

 

  • Other duties as assigned, as required by unit needs.


International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Senior

The International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Senior for inbound exchange students is located in International Student & Scholar Services, and works directly with students, faculty, and staff to create and support a successful and positive experience for inbound non-degree, dual-degree exchange, and short-term program students. This position provides individual advising in regards to the J-1 immigration status of international students while at the University. This position accurately reports information and ensures compliance with Department of State regulations and advocates and acts at a senior level for international student/scholar support and programming to ensure that the department is responsive to specific needs.

Compliance - 30%

 

 

  • Independently prepares J-1 immigration documents for new initial, and continuing students.
  • SEVIS compliance - creating records, mandatory reporting, maintenance of status, employment authorization, departure notification, mandatory orientation, DoS incident reports.
  • Interpret J-1 regulations to develop institutional policies and procedures together with the ISSS team.
  • Ensures institutional compliance through serving as an Alternate Responsible Officer.
  • Mandatory reporting within regulatory deadlines to ensure university SEVIS compliance for new and continuing students through the use of Sunapsis, Peoplesoft, Salesforce and other technology platforms.
  • Maintains data integrity in Sunapsis and Peoplesoft to support university regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates or undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Senior

 

 

  • Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • US citizenship or lawful permanent residence status (necessary to qualify as a Designated School Official and Alernate Responsible Officer).

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. Salary

International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Intermediate

Anticipated salary range is $41,421 to $51,776. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

International Student and Scholar Services Advisor, Senior

Anticipated salary range is $47,634 to $59,542. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
