Senior Director, Operational Strategy & Special Initiatives

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Controller, the Senior Director, Operational Strategy & Special Initiatives will be responsible for strategically coordinating, analyzing, and managing projects and initiatives that impact the success of Business & Financial Services (BFS) including broad impact for many business functions across the campus.

 

This position manages strategy, operations & process improvement opportunities to include identification of technology solutions/enhancements across BFS and highlight strategic priorities for long range strategic planning efforts developed in partnership with AVC/Controller and BFS Core Leadership Team (BFS-CLT).

 

Incumbent leads and responsible for the execution of department initiatives and special projects that primarily focus on the needs of BFS with department & campus-wide impact and limited support to Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) and VC Health Sciences. This position will carry out operation optimization projects aimed at bringing alignment around department practices and provide consultative and hands-on support to senior management to achieve organizational strategic goals.

 

Incumbent provides overall direction and coordination of department-wide operational improvement initiatives, enabling and accelerating campus wide collaboration, identifying and sharing best practices, and identifying, prioritizing, and implementing initiatives that drive department strategic objectives. The position will be required to establish and maintain strong and effective relationships across multiple Vice Chancellor areas and members of their senior management teams, department/unit, central business offices and other key stakeholders.

 

This position is responsible for leading/overseeing programs and projects that require the highest level of business, process, financial and data analysis, complex realignments, and the creation of new business and operational models directly for Assistant Vice Chancellor/Controller, BFS, SIO, VC Health Sciences and other senior leadership.

 

The Senior Director will need to understand and recognize the interconnectedness between finance, human resources, research and academic operations to evaluate problems and identify solutions. The projects implemented by the Senior Director resulting from this analysis and the subsequent recommendations will directly contribute to operational objectives or the resolution of major department issues and are addressing pressing needs at the department and/or VC level (including VC-CFO, Health Sciences, and SIO). The focus of this role includes, but is not limited to initiatives relating to a) service quality; b) process efficiency; c) cost reduction; d) risk reduction; e) speed and scalability, and f) revenue growth.

 

This position is also member of the BFS Extended Core Leadership Team (BFS-ECLT) participating fully in strategic planning, formulation of goals and objectives, and decision-making

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in management or business-related field and/or equivalent relevant university administrative experience or; combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategic initiatives management and consulting practices.

• Proven experience providing counsel and management support to a high-level executive, overseeing commitments and ensuring priorities are managed in a highly dynamic and changing environment

• Extensive experience managing organizational redesign and optimization programs, projects, and initiatives in complex corporate or higher education environments.

• Extensive knowledge of financial policies, practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; complex data & financial analysis and accounting

• Advanced knowledge of business and accounting principles and best business practices.

• Extensive and demonstrated experience in developing strategies; Designing, developing, implementing and administering complex contract relationships with external entity partners.

• Excellent change management skills with demonstrated experience across all levels of the University or similarly complex organization.

• Advanced interpersonal skills and service orientation combined with superior written, oral communication and presentation skills.

• Expert ability using multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to synthesize and integrate information for highly complex, strategic financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Must pass a background check

• Effort outside a 40 hour workweek will be required

• This position is expected to be fully remote initially and subject to change based on leadership determination in alignment with University guidance on flexible work arrangement policies and protocol.
