TITLE: State Specialist of Community Nutrition Education                

DEPARTMENT:  College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences                 

REPORTS TO:   Associate Extension Administrator

EFFECTIVE DATE:  Position will Remain Open until Filled

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:      Full-time    

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION:  Exempt            

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:  The State Specialist in Community Nutrition Education is a position in the Land Grant Program at Kentucky State University. The position will be a combination of Extension (75%) and applied research (25%). 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The State Specialist of Community Nutrition Education, within The College of Agriculture, Community and the Sciences (ACE) at Kentucky State University (KYSU) will provide leadership in the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Programs (EFENP), Summer Feeding Service Programs (SFSP) and other specialty Nutrition Programs. The State Specialist of Community Nutrition Education will work collaboratively with Family Consumer Science (FCS), Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), Community Resource and Development (CRD), 4-H Youth and Development program leaders, in planning programs for community-based implementation to support nutrition educators in serving limited-resource and socially disadvantaged audiences across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

•    Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to nutrition education programs and other collaborative initiatives. (EFNEP and SFSP).

•    Assist in developing, implementation, and evaluation of statewide nutrition programs.

•    Coordinate the development of educational materials, factsheets and or publications.

•    Comprehend, interpret and implement policies relevant to nutrition programs (EFNEP, SFSP).

•    Conduct in-service training for Extension staff and partners.

•    Manage statewide budgets and monitor expenditures. (EFNEP and SFSP).

•    Maintain documentation for budgets, annual updates and other federal and state reports. (EFNEP, SFSP).

•    Manage records and reports, giving proper attention to policy and procedural concerns.

•    Work collaboratively with Extension Specialists and Extension Associates in the piloting and implementation of nutrition education programs.

•    Complete monthly and yearly statistical reporting requirements through Kentucky Extension Reporting System. 

•    Attend various meetings for Land-Grant, Cooperative Extension, and County operations.

•    Work with advisory groups, and committees to facilitate community involvement in nutrition education programming.

OTHER DUTIES: 

The position will conduct other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Master’s Degree required, but a terminal degree is preferred. The degree must be from an accredited university in Agricultural and or Extension Education, Public Health, Food, and Nutritional Sciences, or other related fields.

•    A minimum of three to five years’ experience in program development, or demonstrates ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:    

•    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 

•    Organizing and coordinating skills. 

•    Ability to create, compose, and edit written material.

•    Knowledge of the Extension program development process, evaluation, and reporting.

•    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

•    Evidence of administrative leadership, managerial skills, and the ability to work as a team member.

•    Knowledge of current and emerging research trends in areas of expertise. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (examples provided below)

•    Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

•    Light physical effort. Requires handling of an average weight of 10 pounds.

•    Overnight travel in-state and out-of-state required (25%).
