    Department Summary

    The UO Department of Human Physiology is home to undergraduate and graduate students who desire strong training in human physiology and anatomy that will prepare them for careers in medicine, allied health professions, and biomedical research. Additionally, the department conducts cutting-edge research in all aspects of physiology using animal and human models to study health and disease.     Position Summary

    The Motor Skill Lab in the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work on studies investigating the neural and biomechanic control of skilled action. The studies will use a combination of behavioral/biomechanic measures and multivariate functional neuroimaging measures.

    The postdoctoral scholar will assist with multiple aspects of the study, including study start-up, data collection, processing, and analysis, and dissemination of code, data, and study results in online repositories, manuscripts, and presentations. They will share responsibility for supervising and training study staff (research assistants, graduate, and undergraduate students), developing data processing pipelines, and overseeing data management and quality control. The position is ideal for candidates who are interested in understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms by which humans interact skillfully with their environment.

    We are looking for highly conscientious and motivated individuals with excellent management, data analysis, and communication skills, as well as substantial experience in the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of biomechanical and neurophysiological data.

    Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Human Physiology, Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of experience with acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting neurophysiological data as part of the candidate's doctoral training.

    Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct human subjects research as part of the candidate's doctoral training.
  • Strong scientific communication skills demonstrated through a record of publication (including first-author manuscripts) in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to function effectively as a team member and team leader.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, requiring participatory decision-making and cooperative interactions among employees.
  • Strong computer coding skills (e.g., Matlab, Python, R).
  • Strong technical skills in interfacing computers with external devices (e.g., Motion tracking, Force Sensors, EMG, TMS, MR devices with software).
  • Strong conceptual and technical skills in collection, processing, analysis, and software for MRI (e.g., FSL, SPM).

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Conceptual and technical skills in programming software (e.g., Matlab, Python, E-prime, Github).
  • Experience in the collection and analysis of MRI data.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing kinematic and kinetic data.
  • Experience in the planning, implementation, and tracking of a research project comprising multiple assessments.
  • Topical expertise in motor control.
  • Experience with equitable and inclusive recruitment and engagement of community samples.
  • Interest and experience in open science and reproducible research practices.
