Climbing Wall Attendant


Under the direct supervision of the Climbing Program and Team Building Supervisor, Aztec Adventure Program Assistant, and Climbing Wall Attendant Level 2. The Climbing Wall Attendant (CWA) Level 1 will assist with the climbing wall supervision during open hours, give safety orientations, and assist with teaching belay classes and partaking in route setting. Additional roles include participant check-in and equipment check outs, routine cleaning and organization, and conducting skill/safety/risk assessments. The CWA Level 1 should possess the ability to work independently and as a team member interacting with a diverse population of Aztec Recreation members and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Functions
  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere for climbing wall and team building participants
  • Assists with the daily supervision of the climbing wall and climbers
  • Enforces all policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment managing the risks associated with indoor rock climbing
  • Encourages and interacts with climbers assisting in technical advice, body positioning and movements
  • Manages office/climbing facility during operating hours and is responsible for keeping the office and wall clean, neat and free of any hazardous objects noting any maintenance items needing attention
  • Assists in setting climbing routes of varying difficulty as directed by the program supervisor
  • Confidently assists with the skill assessment, climbing wall orientations, ENS courses, and special events
  • Engages participants by implementing interactive activities while creating a safe and inclusive environment
  • Educates, explains and enforces all policies and procedures consistently to participants, members, and guests
  • Serves as an active member in the Emergency Action Plan if an incident were to occur
  • Attends and participates in all ARC, Aztec Adventures staff meetings and trainings.

Customer Service and Collaboration
  • Ensures customer service standards are met; Maintains positive and effective working relationships with all customers
  • Informs supervisor of any customer issues

Safety
  • Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
  • Adheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe Practices
  • Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and regularly inspects program environment and equipment to ensure safety
Minimum Requirements


Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Must be currently enrolled at San Diego State University, taking a minimum of 6 units

Experience:

  • Ability to facilitate small group activities for groups 8 - 15 in size and can relay appropriate climbing technique to participants

License & Certifications:
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certifications are required
  • Current ARC Climbing wall top rope belay certification

Trainings:

  • Must complete Gender Awareness and Computer Security trainings within 30 days of hire

Preferred Requirements:

Experience:
  • Previous experience working at an indoor climbing
  • Previous experience climbing outdoors and/or leading outdoor climbing trips
  • Demonstrate proper rope management skills, knot tying, route setting, climbing and belay techniques
  • Illustrate proper use, care, inspection, and understanding of all climbing wall equipment (harnesses, helmets, ropes, hardware, belay devices, rescue gear, etc.), elements (wall, anchors, hold, etc.) and environment (indoor facility specifications, mats, etc.)

License & Certifications:

  • AMGA Climbing wall instructor (CWI) or Single pitch instructor (SPI)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people effectively and diplomatically
  • Ability to manage information flow prioritizing tasks effectively (including internal, external and participant communication)
  • Ability to demonstrate experience in top-rope climbing and bouldering settings
  • Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Evidence of and ability to articulate a strong, current, practical knowledge of outdoor programming

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a part-time position. Must be able to work up to 20 hours per week including evenings and weekends; employee schedules vary according to business needs throughout a full academic year. Employees are responsible for their own travel to work locations, both on campus and off campus, for all shifts.

While working indoors, the lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment available and in recreation environment including climbing wall. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels may require hearing protection to be worn when performing duties.

When working outdoors for program activities, exposure to sun, heat, wind, rain, weather and other outdoor elements expected. Outdoor areas will include trails, campgrounds, field areas, lakes, rivers, pools, and challenge courses located in forested areas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, climbing, and working in confined space, lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying loads up to 50 pounds (unassisted) and 75 pounds (with assistance), and using ladders. Work may require standing and moving for extended periods and working at heights.

  • Position reports to the Climbing wall and team building supervisor, Aztec Adventure Program Assistant, and Climbing wall attendants level 2 staff
  • Additional interactions may include full-time and part-time staff within Aztec Recreation



EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Range I Step I, $16.30/hour



A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with Associated Students.
