Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: Nine-month teaching position beginning, August 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The SCUBA Program Director will oversee and continue the development of the academic SCUBA diving minor housed in the Department of Kinesiology at Western Illinois University. The SCUBA diving minor currently includes approximately 30 students from across multiple departments at WIU. The Director is expected to teach SCUBA classes, maintain equipment and training facilities, act as a liaison with the campus and regional community in an effort to expand the minor across the region, and teach other courses as needed in the Department of Kinesiology.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a certified SCUBA instructor from one of the major training agencies (NAUI, PADI, SSI, SDI/TDI, etc.,) with the ability to lead classes ranging from entry level open water SCUBA certification through divemaster and have professional experience teaching a variety of SCUBA specialty courses. In addition, the candidate needs to hold a Masters degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning with an ability to teach other courses in physical education, exercise science, nutrition and dietetics, coaching, and/or sport management in the Department of Kinesiology at WIU.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Instructor-trainer certification with the ability to certify SCUBA instructors as part of our SCUBA minor. The successful candidate should also demonstrate the ability to recruit students through Discover SCUBA programs, lead SCUBA-related travel experiences, and provide technical expertise when maintaining equipment and facilities. Previous teaching experience in higher education is also preferred.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of appointment.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Kinesiology Department's 15 full time faculty members serve a growing department of about 300 undergraduate students majoring in four B.S. degree programs in Nutrition and Dietetics, Exercise Science, Nutrition and Foodservice Management, and Physical Education Teacher Education, and approximately 70 graduate students majoring in the M.S. degree programs in Kinesiology and Sport Management. The Department has an array of facilities that support teaching and research related to sport management, athletic training, biomechanics, human performance, and pedagogy. Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago. Macomb is located approximately 75 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport (Moline, IL) and 70 miles from the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (Peoria, IL).

WIU-Quad Cities (Student Population: 916): The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its metropolitan, non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000). The Quad Cities (population 376,000) rests on the banks of the Mississippi River and is comprised of Moline and Rock Island in western Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in eastern Iowa. Moline, Illinois is home to the Quad Cities International Airport.
