Student Disability Services (SDS) coordinates academic, housing, dining and transportation accommodations in accordance with applicable laws, institutional policies and enhances understanding of disability as a cultural identity.

We are seeking twoAssistant Directors, Student Disability Servicesfor the SDS Homewood Hub.

TheAssistant Director, Student Disability Services - Homewoodmanages accommodations and services for students with disabilities in Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) at the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD.

The Assistant Director, Student Disability Services - Homewood/Peabody manages accommodations for students at the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) well as the Peabody Institute, our conservatory focused on music and dance. The Assistant Director will be based in Baltimore and will work at both the Homewood Campus (75%) and at Peabody Institute (25%), but flexibility is essential.

Under the leadership of the Senior Director of Student Disability Services, Homewood campus the office provides a variety of services to undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities. Those services include providing general information on the process for accessing accommodations. We are seeking excellent professionals to provide support for undergraduate students and graduate students at the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus and the Peabody Institute. Both roles will also provide and receive back-up support / collaborate with SDS Homewood Hub staff. On occasion the ability to work remotely and infrequently travel to other campuses is required. Depending on need, the Assistant Directors will be expected to increase visibility on any campus.

Overall, the goal is to ensure students with disabilities have consistently inclusive and accessible experiences at Hopkins. The Assistant Director will support the diverse academic, personal/developmental, and interpersonal needs of our growing population of students with disabilities.

Experience working in a diverse and multicultural work environment is preferred. Flexible hours are required at key times in the academic year including evenings, weekends and/or peak periods.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Determine eligibility and reasonable accommodations/provide support for students with disabilities (50%)

  • Manage a caseload of students who disclose a disability as well as with other students interested in exploring resources to determine if they have a disability; review documentation to determine eligibility for accessibility services and accommodations while also providing direct services to students including training in self-advocacy, advising and strategy enhancement.
  • Advise prospective and current students regarding accessibility services, technology, and related resources.
  • Support student in disability identity development and self-advocacy as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with faculty to implement reasonable and appropriate accommodations.
  • Act as a resource for faculty and staff providing training on complex issues related to the provision of services for disabled students; educate faculty and staff on compliance with federal and state regulations as needed.
  • Interact with student services departments to ensure that disabled students have equal access to enrollment services, financial aid, in-person and online courses, and other student success initiatives.
  • Research on an ongoing basis; proactively develop systems and services to determine and incorporate best practices. Collaborate with colleagues (national and local) as well as partners across campus to continually innovate and deliver services/accommodations in most inclusive way.
  • Participate in school Orientations, create promotional materials, respond to inquiries, and serve as a local expert.
  • Promote and support a culture of acceptance and inclusion for students with disabilities. through trainings, programming and consultation.
  • Collaborate with SDS staff university-wide, including participation in User Group meetings with SDS staff.
  • Work closely with Communication Access Specialist and the Alternate Format Specialist to ensure student needs are met timely.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach.
  • Provide guidance around accessible and inclusive approaches to campus community members and increasing awareness addressing barriers proactively.

Supervise SDS Graduate Assistants (20%)

  • Recruit, Hire and Train.
  • Supervise graduate students, providing clear direction and oversight. Hold regular meeting and provide feedback useful students to facilitate continuous improvement with goal of mastery.

Budget

  • Manage the budget for Student Disability Services for graduate students, including spending, tracking and reconciliation.

Note-taker Acquisition & Assignment

  • Manage note taking system and graduate student/ administrative staff that support this service.
  • Provide professional development and support staff with recruiting, training, and assigning note-takers.
  • Develop and maintain effective systems to support this process, including a database of trained peer note takers available to meet the students’ needs.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and best practices in order to make improvements.

Manage Website (15%)

  • Data Management and Assessment.
  • Stay abreast of upgrades/updates, consult to address technical issues, and ensure products are fully utilized.
  • Manage ongoing confidential data collection and analysis.
  • Develop, revise and maintain accessible content on the Student Disability Services website, providing exemplary sites and including information about policies, processes, trainings, events, programming, etc.
  • Develop a strategic marketing plan for the site, incorporating social media to increase awareness and access to services and accommodations.
  • Implement a calendar or other means for updating students, staff, and faculty on the office’s activities, deadlines, etc.
  • Stay abreast of best practice in disability services, updating pages and adding new resources in a timely way.
  • Evaluate programs, services and initiatives to determine impact, recommending revisions and improvements as needed.

Other Duties as Assigned (15%)

  • Communicate SDS policies and procedures to entire Homewood community.
  • Serve on University and campus committees and working groups.
  • Design and deliver trainings/workshops around awareness and inclusion for the Homewood.
  • Represent Student Disability Services at Homewood open houses and orientations.
  • Plan events and advise student groups/initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training to keep current in disability services field and advise about approaches to service and accommodation delivery.
  • Complete other tasks and initiatives as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, its 2008 amendments, and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education and disabilities.
  • Experience working with adult learners at a graduate or professional school is preferred.
  • The diplomatic and tactful nature required to build relationships quickly across cultures within the university and to work effectively with a wide range of people, including persons from diverse backgrounds. A proven record of working successfully with a variety of populations.
  • An understanding of issues relevant to persons with disabilities and the ability to anticipate students' needs, expectations, and requirements with a focus on universal design in a post-secondary environment.
  • The ideal candidate will work closely with the Senior Director to make fiscally responsible budget projections based on daily operations and research accommodations to efficiently meet service obligations.
  • Experience working with disability services software such as AIM is highly desirable.
  • An understanding of assistive technologies for persons with disabilities, including some knowledge of/familiarity with Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Inspiration, and Glean.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills to research and analyze data and information from a variety of sources to make sound recommendations and decisions.
  • The ability to manage a staff of graduate and undergraduate students, and to ensure their timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and listening skills.
  • Strong technical skills, including knowledge of online access issues and means for addressing them.
  • The ability to produce letters, reports, brochures, handbooks, posters and informational materials.
  • A proven leader with the ability to set priorities, achieve objectives and to manage multiple complex assignments/projects across two schools.
  • Ability to develop and implement short and long-range goals that meet program needs. Collaborative, strategic problem-solving, planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent judgment and sensitivity to the unique and confidential needs of students with disabilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of student development and intersectionality.
  • Experience supporting diverse student populations and particularly international student engagement.
  • Ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, student-oriented, and data driven environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Computer skills to include proficiency using Microsoft Suite is a must.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in education, higher education, student personnel, disability studies or relevant field.
  • Three years of experience, preferably in disability services in a post-secondary setting.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for required education as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
