POSITION PURPOSE
The Student Success & Instruction Librarian designs engaging first-year and across-the-curriculum learning experiences to build students' research skills. Working collaboratively with colleagues in the Penrose Library, academic departments, and the Student Affairs division, the Student Success & Instruction Librarian will improve student engagement with library resources and programming with a particular focus on first year, first generation, transfer, English language learners, and international undergraduate students.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Supporting Student Success (45%)
- Work with the Head of Instruction, Research & Outreach and Head of Collection Management to prioritize and coordinate projects and initiatives focused on teaching research skills and critical thinking to students in their first two years at Whitman.
- Coordinate, promote, and assess the library's information literacy instruction program for General Education courses.
- Develop, promote and assess online learning resources that support information literacy instruction for first-year & transfer students.
- Promote and support the use of open access and open educational resources.
- Participate in campus wide efforts to integrate more inclusive teaching practices.
- Participate in providing research support and library instruction to students, faculty, and staff.
- Develop activities, outreach tools, or programs that support social justice, equity, and diversity.
Provide Instructional and Research Services (45%)
- Design, teach, assess, and revise curricula in conjunction with the Instruction Coordinator & Outreach Librarian.
- Provide multi-tiered instruction, including individual meetings and class-related instruction particularly focusing on first year, first generation, transfer, English language learners, and international undergraduate students based upon the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Provide consultations in person, by telephone, or through electronic means.
- May serve as liaison to selected academic departments.
Professional Development (5%)
- Attend professional meetings and conferences to stay informed about trends and issues affecting academic librarianship.
- Represents the Library to the Orbis Cascade Alliance and other consortia as needed.
Other (5%)
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
Individuals must be able to explain and demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform safely the essential functions of the job as described below with or without reasonable accommodation:

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary reference practice.
- Thorough knowledge of information literacy standards and practices.
- Familiarity with resources, current scholarship, and research strategies in student success or assessment.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively.
- Commitment to supporting students from underrepresented communities, such as BIPOC and first-generation students.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a changing work environment.
- Expertise in program/outcomes evaluation, research design, instrument design, and the management, analysis, and reporting of data.
- Ability to navigate and search electronic databases.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations working with diverse audiences and colleagues throughout the library and beyond.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MLS or comparable degree from an ALA accredited graduate program with an emphasis on reference and/or instruction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of academic library experience.
Experience with digitized and networked information resources.
Experience in library instruction or in other educational instruction.
