Job Summary

The Director of the Center for Inclusion & Social Change (CISC) provides leadership for the Center, which directly supports the Division of Student Affairs' efforts of student inclusion, belonging, retention, persistence and success. CISC provides high-impact transformational community building and educational programs for the CU community to nurture leaders grounded in the core concepts of intersectional identity development, diversity education, equity, and social justice. This position is responsible for developing the vision, direction and actualization of an inclusive co-curricular learning environment. In addition, the position will work collaboratively with the campus community in advocating for and addressing issues related to historically underrepresented, marginalized and/or underserved students.

Students can become active, informed global citizens by engaging and interacting with individuals from different cultures, and staff provide community-building programs and educational opportunities for students to learn and teach.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Center Leadership and Supervision:
  • Lead the CISC mission and provide strategic leadership to the Center to deepen its strategic mission and purpose, and directly supervise four program directors and an executive assistant. Provide knowledgeable oversight of each area and devise optimal staffing and operational models to ensure strong strategic and day-to-day leadership.
  • Develop and facilitate the CISC strategic plan. Direct the departments’ mission and facilitate partnerships within the office to support intersectional identity development. The four key areas within CISC are:
    • Education and Social Change, which provides transformative educational opportunities to create civically conscious leaders who respectfully engage in social justice discourse and activism.
    • Intercultural Engagement, which cultivates belonging, celebrates communities and promotes identity development to support underrepresented student success using an intersectional lens, including advocacy and support for undocumented students.
    • Pride, which builds belonging and community for CU Boulder LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty, raises awareness about these issues and advocates for this community.
    • First Generation Programs and Enrichment, which supports a scholarship for first-generation scholars within the larger first-generation population at CU Boulder, to develop innovative programs that amplify their diverse voices and build community and strong academic foundations during college.
  • Lead a department of 10 professional employees, student staff and student mentors within the Center. Assist staff in their professional development and identify resources to improve their performance.
  • Support Center staff in creating and implementing outcome-based innovative programs that invite all students to communicate across lines of race, ethnicity, sex, religion, gender, class, sexual orientation, documentation status, and other social identities. This includes continuing to review and assess the development of students to support their constantly evolving needs.
  • Foster and maintain a climate that is supportive of employees and respectful of differences, as well as create a learning environment for students that encourages community, personal development, self-reflection, and academic success.
Campus Leadership and Strategic Partnerships:
  • Lead the Center to serve as an advocate and resource to the University community on proven practices and national trends for identity development, diversity education, and social justice.
  • Provide expertise, consultation and influence to faculty, administrators, staff, students, and the greater community to support, advocate and center the needs and experiences of underrepresented students.
  • Coordinate and deliver programs to promote inclusion and social change, and facilitate a campus that actively engages and resembles activities and behaviors of social justice in action.
  • In collaboration with campus partners, lead efforts to envision, conceptualize, and communicate the DEI mission of the university through an inclusive and student-centered lens.
  • Represent the Center at student, staff and faculty events, and collaborate with administration, faculty and staff in the broad-based promotion of inclusion and social change to support underrepresented students/student groups.
  • Provide leadership in developing collaborative efforts with departments within the Division of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Athletics, and the Boulder community to create and implement sustainable, innovative and transformative diverse workshops and services related to engaging students and enhancing the campus climate for underrepresented communities.
  • Serve on high-profile DEI committees within Student Affairs, across campus, and within the community.
  • Represent the Center at divisional leadership meetings and retreats.
Program Effectiveness, Research and Assessment:
  • Promote research and practices related to identity development and DEI, including racial justice, intersectionality, decolonization, and inclusive excellence.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that help all members of the campus community grow in mutual respect and understanding.
  • Coordinate assessment initiatives related to academic and social needs, co-curricular involvement, campus climate, and student learning for underrepresented student populations.
  • Consult on departmental needs and research potential solutions on initiatives that may involve: identity development, cultural center development, organizational change, leadership and management development, process improvement, performance management, employee engagement, learning programs, etc.
  • Integrate student development practices and theories within process improvement for continued program growth and development, and stay up-to-date with current research and trends impacting areas of responsibility for data-driven decision-making.
  • Assess organization and departmental professional development needs, and analyze gaps to deepen staff learning and growth.
  • Evaluate programs offered by the Center and make ongoing improvements/adjustments as needed.
Budget and Fiscal Planning:
  • Provide budget oversight of over $1.5 million for all staff and Center areas and ensure the responsible planning and expenditure of fiscal resources in a manner consistent with all University policies and applicable local, state and federal laws.
  • Routinely assess the necessity of various expenditures, including programming activities, staff recognition, and professional development/training.
  • Consider equitable approaches to budget allocation which will best support and advocate for underrepresented student populations.
  • Meet timelines for all requests for reports, data, publications, and budgets and provide timely/pertinent budgetary information to staff throughout the year.
What You Should Know

This position provides the opportunity for a hybrid work modality including both on-site and remote work hours and requires the availability and flexibility to work evenings and weekends to support students and represent the Center.

What We Can Offer

The hiring range for this opportunity is $98,000-$110,000 annually. Onboarding assistance is available within Student Affairs guidelines.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4 years of professional experience in higher education administration including experience in DEI program planning, assessment, budget formulation, staff supervision and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience with the intersection of race, identity and ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identities within a University setting and the academic and social pressures encountered by students at a large major research university.
  • Demonstrated experience with leading/implementing co-curricular campus-wide diversity educational training to all students with strategic partnerships across campus.

  • Understanding and proven ability to develop, coach, supervise and manage professional staff.
  • Proven record of creating strong working relationships, advising students and student organizations, developing programs, as well as coordinating and facilitating workshops.
  • Ability to be creative and navigate ambiguity, exhibit resourcefulness, take initiative and hold a high degree of motivation.
  • Demonstrated ability in strategizing: setting a vision for an organization, creating consensus, and implementing a vision.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • 8 years of progressive administrative leadership experience, preferably at a large and complex university including experience in DEI program planning, assessment, budget formulation, staff supervision and decision-making.
  • Master’s degree or Doctorate degree in higher education administration or related field, or commensurate years of experience.
  • Leadership experience in retention program development, DEI programming/education and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding issues and trends in higher education programs that focus on the retention needs of low-income, first-generation, LGBTQIA+, women and femmes, students of color, undocumented, and other historically underrepresented, marginalized and/or underserved college students.
  • Demonstrated experience with providing high-impact social identity cohort model program experiences for undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated experience with providing high-impact campus-wide culturally engaging educational programs.
