The Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions at the University of South Alabama invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. The position of Department Chair is a full-time, 12-month, tenure/tenure-track faculty appointment at the associate professor or professor rank. At the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must provide evidence of an established research agenda (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, grant funding, etc.) that meets department and college standards for that rank.  At the rank of Professor, candidates must provide evidence of an established and significant research agenda that meets department and college standards for that rank.

Position Requirements:

  • A professional degree in physical therapy
  • Academic doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, EdD, )
  • Current academic rank of associate professor or professor at an accredited institution or meets qualifications for these ranks
  • Six years of full-time experience in higher education
  • Three years of full-time experience in physical therapy education
  • Higher education administrative and leadership experience with evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • Eligibility for physical therapy licensure in Alabama

 

The Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy reports directly to the Dean of the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions. The Chair is expected to provide strategic vision and leadership to the academic department, including management of the academic program and research labs, and continued development of faculty. Successful applicants will also demonstrate excellent communication and fiscal management skills, ability to mentor faculty, and a record of scholarly achievement related to the field of physical therapy.

 

The Department of Physical Therapy at USA, with a nearly 47-year history, offers an accredited well-established and highly respected entry-level DPT program. The academic program is developed, managed, and implemented by the Department’s nine full-time faculty members. The Department is housed in the Health Sciences building and includes research labs with research equipment to include a Vicon motion analysis system, BTE Primus, and a Woodway TechnoBody 3.0 Walker-View Treadmill. Innovative teaching methods are encouraged and supported through the University’s Human-Patient Simulation Program, Innovation in Learning Center, TeamUSA Quality Enhancement Plan, and the Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice initiative. Collaborative research and clinical practice opportunities are available through the USA Health System which includes the USA University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center, Children’s & Women’s Hospital, the Mitchell Cancer Institute, the USA Health Physicians Group, and the department’s PT Faculty Practice.
