Job Description:

Summary: Primary responsibility for student assessment, eligibility, orientation, advisement, counseling, graduation and transfer functions. Develops and conducts workshops, maintains transfer resources, and arranges visits to four-year institutions, multicultural training experiences, and cultural events. Supplies information for reports and assists in compiling them to demonstrate effectiveness. Reports to the Director, Veteran Student Support Services. This is a grant funded position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Director, Veteran Student Support Services in planning and coordinating, workshops and visits, to upper level colleges and universities.
  • Plans, publicizes, and conducts workshops and cultural event trips.
  • Represents Veteran Student Support Services at necessary functions, meetings, and conferences.
  • Attends special program meetings and staff development functions.
  • Assists students with enrollment processes in programs and courses during registration periods.
  • Administers interest, aptitude, and career related tests as needed.
  • Provides academic advising to students for the Veteran Student Support Services program.
  • Supplies regular academic, career, and transfer counseling including information on particular colleges, cost of education, and housing to Veteran Student Support Services students.
  • Coordinates efforts with the PSC Center for Advising and Career Services, Financial Aid Office, and representatives of senior colleges, to supply referrals to students.
  • Assists in communicating with upper level colleges and universities.
  • Assigns mentor/role model for students.
  • Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations that apply to this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor and to the Pensacola State College Police Department/Public Safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
  • Demonstrates respect for all individuals and the ability to work with diverse populations especially the targeted group for this grant.
  • Ability to create and make presentations to individuals or groups.
  • Possesses superior interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills; able to problem solve, exhibit patience, be flexible, handle conflict, and have a good sense of humor.
  • Must possess coordination, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Scheduled work involves some evenings, weekends, and/or variation in work hours for registration times and special college and/or community events.
  • In district and overnight travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, student development, social work, or related area is required. Two years postsecondary experience with responsibility in career or financial aid counseling, academic advising, curriculum planning, or admissions is required. Computer skills and strong interpersonal skills are required. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.

Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of §435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer the counselor be a military veteran; will consider a minimum of one year experience providing supportive services to military populations. Preference is given to qualified individuals from a background similar to the targeted population. Prefer experience in program development, federal education programs, open admissions schools, transfer counseling, and working with educationally disadvantaged students. Supervisory experience and ability to work with target population preferred.

ANNUAL SALARY: $ 38,971.01
