Class hours vary, 2-3 evening weekdays and 1 weekend day, as needed.

Our CLIs must have successfully completed a NYS sanctioned CLI course, the internship requirement, and successfully passed the NYS BEMS CLI written certification exam.  Applicant’s CLI certification must be current and must maintain currency throughout employment.

CLIs guide students through the practical skills portion of the EMS course.

CLIs must be certified at least as an EMT with a minimum of one year’s experience providing prehospital care.

Must be clinically competent and field active.

Candidates must have strong communication, organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

An aptitude to teach and mentor students is a must.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide EMS course instruction for the EMS Programs offered through SUNY Sullivan in accordance with NYS DOH EMS Policies, Laws and Regulations, for the purpose of eligibility for NYS Certification, under the guidance and supervision of the CIC. 
  • Assure all students are taught skills properly.  Demonstrate practical skills with consistency and uniformity.   
  • Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce instructions as provided by the CIC, including explaining concepts, principles, and terminology, as well as assisting students in the development of EMS knowledge and practicing EMS related skills.
  • Monitor students’ progress, provide support, and report to CIC.
  • Bring behavior concerns & academic challenges of students to the attention of the CIC.
  • Assist with set up of classroom and equipment, as well as ensuring all equipment is properly secured and stored after class. Assist with inventory of equipment and stock supplies.
  • Utilize computer-based instruction technology.
  • Assist CIC with administrative duties, grading of assignments and examinations.
  • Coordinate and work cooperatively with the CIC, other CLIs and Lab Instructors.
  • Maintain current knowledge and best practices in the Emergency Medical Services field.
  • Maintain professional standards at all times.  Be a good role model for future EMS personnel.
  • CLIs report directly to the CIC Lead Instructor.
