The Dell Medical School at University of Texas at Austin in conjunction with Ascension Texas, is seeking a Medical Director of Adult Cardiothoracic Intensive Care to be part of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care. This physician will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to serve the growing need of the regional adult population in Central Texas to deliver world class adult cardiovascular and thoracic surgical care.

Candidates will possess experience in caring for adults with complex acquired heart disease as well as prior leadership experience in an Adult Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. Primary responsibilities will include oversight and provision of direct care to patients in the CTICU and to oversee the development of a dedicated CTICU as well as the critical care team responsible for taking care of these patients. Other responsibilities include developing and implementing care pathway protocols, overseeing the QI registries pertinent to Adult Cardiothoracic Intensive Care and to oversee education, quality assurance and ongoing performance improvement initiatives. Candidates will also participate in coordinated outreach efforts for the adult cardiovascular and thoracic surgery program.

A successful candidate will have an appointment within the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School University of Texas at Austin. Regular participation in educational activities with medical students and residents will be expected. Opportunities for collaboration with medical and adjunct specialties will be encouraged to allow for the pursuit of innovative program development and clinical research initiatives.

Candidates will have critical care certification through either the American Board of Anesthesiology or American Board of Surgery. If certification is through the American Board of Anesthesiology, CV anesthesia certification will permit clinical care in the CV OR. Hiring is contingent upon obtaining medical licensure in the state of Texas.

Qualifications

  • Meets applicable credentialing and privileging standards for his/her specialty. Board certification or board eligible within two (2) years of completion of training.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment).
  • Demonstrated leadership, clinical teaching, evaluation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence/motivate others at all professional and administrative levels.
  • Must be an innovative self-starter with a commitment to excellence.
  • Must possess tenacity, self-motivation and initiative necessary to drive the development and maintenance of established and new programs.
  • A track record of being able to lead, direct, and influence a team (regardless of reporting lines). Demonstrates behaviors of a team player.
  • Eligible for appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care.
