Position Function:

NSPARC is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with an interest in conducting applied demographic research. This position is the perfect fit for an individual that enjoys engaging in research that informs strategic decisions that address real-world problems.

Salary Grade : UC

The National Strategic Planning & Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) is a university research center at Mississippi State University and is a trusted and reliable source for high-quality research and analysis. We specialize in use-inspired research, data analytics, and software architecture and development. Our research emphasizes workforce and economic development, but the diversity of expertise on our team means we cover a broad range of topics in education, economics, health, human services, and corrections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for conducting research to examine demographic trends and patterns to inform strategic decisions in areas such as economic development, workforce development, education, health, human services, and corrections. This position consists solely of research duties. The successful candidate will participate as a team member interacting with researchers/scientists from other NSPARC areas. A large part of this role involves developing the overall methodology for projects; recommending statistical methods; drafting proposals for extramural funding, research reports and briefs, and other publications; managing and analyzing data from multiple sources; applying business intelligence skills to transform large amounts of data into useful information; working on multiple projects simultaneously; working effectively on multidisciplinary teams; meeting deadlines as agreed with clients and partners; and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in demography, sociology or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated expertise in demographic research, including experience with quantitative research methods and data analysis.
• Familiarity with the latest demographic theories and methods and deep understanding the factors that influence population growth and decline.
• Familiarity working with large longitudinal datasets and publicly available datasets.
• Interest in conducting applied research.
• Experience with survey design and data collection methods.
• Ability to balance several research projects simultaneously.
• Experience with statistical packages such as SAS, STATA, or Python.
• Experience working with spatial data and mapping tools and using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze demographic trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to thrive in a remote-work environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
• Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
• Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
• Travel to meetings within and outside the state with occasional overnight travel.
