Position Summary: The Safety Director is responsible for establishing, updating, and maintaining Washburn University’s emergency management plan and will also coordinate training, practice, and implementation of the plan. The Safety Director will coordinate with Shawnee County Emergency Management and the City of Topeka Emergency services officials to integrate Washburn’s emergency plan with Shawnee County.

Essential Functions:
Assist with safety inspections to address compliance issues of all buildings, teaching and research laboratories, machine shops, athletic fields, fitness centers, weight rooms, and food sales operations as needed. Accompany and advise regulatory and insurance agencies during inspections of buildings and grounds as required. Interpret fire and building codes and compile response information for inspection authorities. Perform plan review and advise departments as needed.

Create and update a complete safety manual annually for the campus community. The manual will cover safety procedures for accidents, evacuations, fires, bloodborne pathogen incidents, reporting and investigating accidents, reporting and investigating accidents, and material safety data sheets.

Provide informational and training seminars for employees. Work with Human Resources to record and maintain training records. Develop and coordinate a workplace safety plan.

Acting as the University’s emergency coordinator, the position must be on the premises or on call to coordinate emergency response measures. Will develop, analyze, and implement emergency plans in conjunction with local fire, police, and emergency services. Coordinate on-campus pre-incident planning surveys to familiarize local emergency responders with hazards on campus.

Develop and maintain the University’s building evacuation and emergency plans.

Provide safety planning services to the offices of Student Life, Student Activities, Residential Living, campus Police Department, Athletics, Facilities Services, and other departments as appropriate.

Assist with hazardous waste storage, regulations, and recordkeeping as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Assist with analyzing hazardous material safety data sheets to advise campus departments.

Chair and organize safety committee meetings. Review items presented or submit items to the appropriate department to review.

Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
Four years of experience in emergency management, fire services, occupational health, or a related safety field,
Or a bachelor's degree in emergency management, fire services, occupational health, or a related safety field,
Or a combination of education and experience in emergency management, fire services, occupational health, or a related safety field equivalent to a four-year degree.

This is a designated safety-sensitive position and will be required to undergo drug testing.
A driver’s license with a driving record that is acceptable according to University standards.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in emergency management.
Emergency management or life safety management experience in a higher education environment.
Field experience in ICS as Incident Commander or at the command and general staff level.
Experience providing safety or risk management training.
Hazardous Waste Operator training.
Certification as an Emergency Manager through Kansas Emergency Management Association or IAEM.
Certification as a plan reviewer, inspector, or investigator in fire or building codes.
Kansas law enforcement certification.
