Position Overview:

Provides guidance and counseling to students in matters related to academic goals, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, and course scheduling. Assists with student orientation. Develops and/or completes college/school documents such as classroom assignments, plans of study, curriculum guides, graduation forms, and study abroad documentation. Typically exempt and does not supervise other staff. Typically reports to a department head or manager. The general schedule for this position is 30 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:
  • Acts as a resource for university information and decision-making strategies.
  • Participates in training and evaluative sessions and recommends to the Assistant Director/Director of Student Advocacy methods to improve student services.
  • Serves as a liaison between students and various campus resources utilizing a holistic approach to student success.
  • Provides guidance to students regarding academic and college financial planning.
  • Creates and supports initiatives to encourage degree completion.
  • Identifies enrollment barriers for students and works with internal and external stakeholders to assist students in navigating University processes.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of student success programs, materials, and outreach efforts.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience Required:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or related field or 4+ years of equivalent work experience in chosen field that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.

Experience Preferred:

Prior academic advising/counseling experience. Must be proficient in basic mathematics. Familiarity with admissions, enrollment, and/or financial aid processes at the University of Central Oklahoma or in an institution of higher education setting and its undergraduate degree programs. Willingness to work within the academic framework of the University and to serve on faculty and student committees.

Scope and impact: This position is an entry level professional position, with actions that may have a measurable impact on operations within a work group.

Resolves problems by selecting from approved alternatives based on past practices, established procedures, or direction. Relies on direct supervision is available to set priorities and objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.

Budget authority: May provide input into budget development by assisting with identification of operational needs and requirements.

Policy and procedure authority: Primarily responsible for executing routine procedures with direction from senior staff.

Reporting relationships: Generally, reports to manager or higher but may receive basic operational direction and guidance from senior level staff members.
