About the Opportunity

Job Summary:

The Director of Research Development and Operations is responsible for the oversight of RD operations, including but not limited to limited submissions, funding opportunity discovery and dissemination, faculty development workshops and training, research development coverage for colleges of campuses that do not have their own RD professional i-house and support for large proposal development for the Provost's office and other units, as required. The Director is responsible for appropriately involving the faculty, deans, associate deans for research, and executive leadership of the University in these initiative development and solicitation activities.

The Director must maintain broad knowledge of the institution, its strengths, interests, and mission, and understand the decision-making practices of sponsors, with expertise in matching their giving patterns with approved university priorities. The Director must also be generally knowledgeable about federal, state and industry sponsors, and be able to seamlessly interact with all of these entities. The Director will be responsible for direct supervision of 3+ staff in the central research development office, as well as direct interaction with multiple colleagues in other units.

This role calls for a seasoned professional who will bring leadership, vision, and demonstrated experience working in a research development, or relevant similar, capacity.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 10+ years direct experience in research development or other relevant area of expertise.
  • Requires excellent organizational and communication skills, professional and personal maturity, as well as exceptional collaborative abilities which command the respect of peers.
  • Bachelor's degree required, but advanced degree preferred. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish credibility and trust among diverse constituents within complex organizations including the University, other research institutions, government agencies, and corporations. Ability to interact in a professional and positive manner with all levels of leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated record of effective leadership. Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A positive outlook, and “can-do” attitude.


Job Responsibilities:

Manages internal limited submissions programs (with direct reports), ensuring a smooth timeline for internal submission, review and selection. Consults with applicants before and after internal deadlines, works with selected winners to prepare their full proposal (20%)

Work with Provost, faculty, deans and school-assigned development/advancement colleagues to develop new programs and targets of opportunity suitable for sponsorship support. Manage new and existing institutionally coordinated competitions, together with advancement colleagues. Manage other Provost office initiatives, as required. (20%)

Manage the training and professional development programs for faculty, researchers, trainees (together with direct reports, central RD, college RD and other unit colleagues as needed). Includes managing the calendar for events, set up of virtual and in-person events, preparation and delivery of some materials (or collection of those prepared by others). (20%)

Provide research development support to college/campuses with no in-house RD staff, as well as back up for large proposal support as needed. (20%)

Provide liaison coordination and oversight for research communications to internal and external audiences. (10%)

Manages funding opportunity discovery, review and dissemination (with direct reports) to various university stakeholders. (10%)
