For the position of Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean, College of Medicine, UAMS seeks a dynamic academic leader with a national reputation to guide its growth and development as a premier provider of medical education, research, patient care and service.  The successful candidate will come prepared by professional experience and personal abilities to advance the academic and research missions and engage in framing the strategic direction for the clinical enterprise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR AND DEAN

Oversee all education and research functions, all clinical and basic science departments and appointment of College faculty. Continue to advance the academic mission and identify priorities for investment in the research/education portfolio. Participate in framing the strategic direction for the clinical enterprise. Jointly appoint Service Line Directors (with Senior Vice Chancellor/CEO of UAMS Health). Develop institutional metrics/targets and help prioritize resource allocation decisions across UAMS (as member of Executive Committee). Collaborate with the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Provost to set and achieve research and education targets, respectively, across all COM departments. Collaborate with other UAMS deans to fully implement inter-professional education across UAMS. Coordinate with Chairs, Service Line Directors, and Executive Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to hold all faculty members accountable for performance goals and standards. Coordinate the research and academic activities of Institutes to align with the service line structure and strategic priorities. Align educational programs with the clinical enterprise. Lead collaborative activities with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Arkansas Children’s and Baptist Health. Work with existing and potential philanthropic supporters and serve as the public representative of the College, as necessary.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Leadership

Progressive and broad administrative leadership experience at the departmental, institute, or central administrative level at an accredited medical school, including experience with accreditation bodies, research oversight, and areas of external regulatory compliance; leadership experiences should demonstrate innovation, demonstrated care for faculty, staff and students, and wise use of resources. 

Administration

Management experience in the administration of medical schools, e.g., issues related to budgets and grants management, research development, and the challenges and operation of the clinical enterprise and educational-clinical partnerships.  Exposure to a highly matrixed and/or service line organizational structure is desirable.

Academic Credentials

Recognized achievement in clinical, educational and/or research pursuits that would warrant appointment as a tenured full professor; M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. and appropriate board certification required, with additional degrees, certification, or licensure expected.
