Position Summary

Under the supervision of the CAIS Director, the position will be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of a nu-Plasma II high-resolution multi-collector mass spectrometer (MC- ICP -MS). The position will work closely with clients and collaborators to develop tailored methods and novel approaches in the areas of radiogenic isotope geochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, geology, and archaeology. In addition, the position will be responsible for supervising student research and developing student research projects. Specific duties include: offering a portfolio of analytical assays by MC- ICP -MS; troubleshooting, repairing, and routine maintenance of the MC- ICP -MS; development, optimization, and troubleshooting of specific assays; development and modification of digestion methodology and sample treatment protocols for solution-based ICP analysis; collaborating with isotope geochemistry researchers to develop innovative projects in the area of isotope geochemistry; collaborating with researchers in the AMS Radiocarbon Lab at CAIS on archaeological projects; management of analytical projects, supplies, and student workers; creating reports and invoicing clients for services; tracking laboratory budgets and expenditures; procurement of external funding in support of the CAIS mission; and publishing peer-reviewed literature. In addition, the position will be responsible for maintaining a clean lab environment, designing and implementing experiments, data analysis, and keeping detailed records of all procedures.

Additional Requirements

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

The preferred qualifications are a PhD in chemistry/geochemistry or related fields plus 2 years of experience in geochemistry laboratory operation, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing the instrumentation. Background in preparing and analyzing samples for strontium and lead isotopes for applications in geology, archaeology, and earth sciences.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

The successful candidate will have effective interpersonal skills; excellent oral communication and the ability to present the results of research in scientific conferences; excellent written communication and the ability to write proposals for external funding; ability to supervise students and technicians.
